  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Look for these new items at stores where you shop for food or kitchen equipment.

More easy, processed lunches

Oscar Mayer Deli Creations is a build-your-own sandwich kit complete with Oscar Mayer shaved meats, Kraft cheeses, specialty sauces and a sub roll that heats in the microwave for fresh-baked taste in 60 seconds. The kits are available in five varieties: Oven Roasted Ham & Cheddar, Honey Ham & Swiss, Turkey Monterey, Turkey & Cheddar Dijon and Steakhouse Cheddar. They are stocked in the refrigerated meat case and sell for $2.99.

Cap'n Crunch goes chocolate

Choco Crunch is the latest cereal from Cap'n Crunch. Choco Crunch brings a new taste to the corn biscuits that have been around for 40 years. The cereal sells for $3.89 for the 15-ounce box and $4.39 for the 17-ounce box.

Mac and cheese from the bistro?

Kraft already had by far the largest assortment of boxed macaroni-and-cheese dinners. There are several lines: the regular "blue box" mixes to which you add milk and margarine, and Deluxe and Velveeta dinners, both complete with sauce in a packet.

Now comes a fourth, more expensive, mac-and-cheese line: Bistro Deluxe, in foil pouches. Varieties are portobello, "classic Cheddar, " three-cheese, and sun-dried tomato and Parmesan. Kraft describes the Bistro Deluxe line as a "sophisticated mac and cheese experience with unique ingredients that appeal to an adult palate."

At one discount supermarket, prices for Kraft mac-and-cheese dinners are 84 cents for the "blue box" (plus 20 cents for milk and margarine) and $2.29 for the 12-ounce Velveeta dinner, both making three (1-cup) servings; and $2.29 for the 14 ounce Deluxe mixes, which serve four. At that store, the three-serving 10-ounce Bistro dinners are $2.99.

New from Newman's Own

Newman's Own Organics has added Hermits, an old-fashioned soft cookie, to its cookie line. Available in Original, Cinnamon and Ginger flavors, each 9-ounce package contains 12 cookies (with 80 calories and 1.5 grams of fat each), with a suggested retail price of $4.29.

The spicy, chewy cookies, which are thought to have originated in colonial England, are based on a recipe used at home, says Nell Newman, co-founder and president of the company.

- New to the company's snack food line are Newman's Own Organics Soy Crisps. Gluten-free (but produced in a facility that manufactures gluten and dairy ingredients), they are made with organic soy and organic rice flours. Available in Cinnamon Sugar, White Cheddar, Lightly Salted and Barbecue varieties, each 1-ounce serving contains 7 to 9 grams of protein, 110 to 120 calories and 2.5 to 4 grams of fat.
