Zopp library to shoe 'The Guardian"

The Hernando County Public Library System will show the film, The Guardian, at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive. The film stars Kevin Costner as legendary swimmer Ben Randal, who, after losing his crew in a fatal crash, is sent to teach at an elite training program for Coast Guard Rescue swimmers. Ashton Kutcher co-stars in this rated PG-13 movie. Light refreshments will be served. Free. No registration is required. For information, call 540-6391.


Picnickers promised pierogies, sausages

St. Andrew's Ukrainian Catholic Church will host its annual Spring Picnic at noon May 20 at 8064 Weeping Willow St., off Cortez Boulevard, west of Mariner Boulevard.

The picnic will include music by Kathy. The menu will include sausages, hot dogs, pierogies, stuffed cabbage, kapusta, salads, desserts and coffee.

Reservations are suggested. Tickets are $12.50 and are available at the church from noon to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays, or by calling Alyce Clark at 688-1839.


Sertoma is looking for a few strikes, spares

Teams and sponsors are needed for the Charity Bowl 2007 to benefit the Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation that will be held May 19 at Lane Glo Bowl, 8631 Old County Road 54.

Registration will be at 6:30 p.m., dinner at 7:30 p.m. and bowling at 8 p.m. There will be three games of bowling. Team trophies and prizes will be awarded. There will also be a silent auction, raffles and door prizes.

Lane sponsorships are available for $220, which includes a team of five bowlers. The cost for individual bowlers is $45 per person.

Checks should be made payable to Sertoma Speech and Hearing Foundation of Florida and mailed to the nonprofit organization at 4443 Rowan Road, New Port Richey, FL, 34653.

Golf tourney will help education foundation

The Hernando County Education Foundation will host its annual golf tournament May 18 at Silverthorn Country Club, 4550 Golf Club Lane.

Sponsorships are available from $100 to $10, 000. The cost for individual golfers is $75, which includes golf, dinner and gifts. The event will include a silent auction.

Registration for the scramble-format tournament will begin at 11:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 1:30 p.m. Dinner and award presentations, as well as door prizes, will be at 5:30 p.m.

The registration deadline is May 11.

The golf tournament is the foundation's major fundraiser, allowing the group to offer mini-grants to teachers to fund innovative projects for students, scholarships, science fair and Spring Coast Environmental Education Center activities.

The foundation also assists in honoring superior academic-achieving students at a Chamber of Commerce event and partners with the Hernando Bowlers Association and Elks Lodge to recognize significant student turnaround.

The School Related Employee of the Year dinner program and Teacher of the Year program are also provided by the foundation.


Toll-free number lets you report elder abuse

The Mid-Florida Area Agency on Aging offers a toll-free number for those wishing to report elder abuse.

Elder abuse includes physical and emotional abuse, sexual abuse, exploitation, neglect and abandonment, both inflicted by caregivers as well as self-neglect cases.

According to the National Center on Elder Abuse, only about 16 percent of elder abuse cases are reported.

Hoops team looks for flea market vendors

Springstead High School's girls basketball team will host a flea market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. May 12 in the school parking lot at 3300 Mariner Blvd.

Vendor spaces are available for $10 (bring your own table). Set-ups will begin at 6:30 a.m.

The event will also include a carwash and bake sale.
