LAND O'LAKES - An outstanding pitching performance by Matt Smith and a thrilling 12th-inning rally weren't enough for Land O'Lakes on Tuesday night as it dropped a 3-2 heartbreaker to Newsome.
Smith pitched nine innings, striking out 12 and allowing just three hits.
Smith also singled in a run in the first inning. The only run he gave up, which tied the score in the third inning, was unearned.
But Smith was matched on the hill by Newsome's Matt Greer, who threw nine innings and 133 pitches and struck out 18 Gators.
After Newsome scored two runs in the top of the 12th against Gators reliever Trey Dahl on a two-out bases loaded single by Kyle Copack to take a 3-1 lead, the Gators almost won it in the bottom of the inning.
Cameron Harris doubled in a run to make it 3-2, and with runners on second and third Brad Patton lined a shot to rightfield that was caught by the charging outfielder to end the game.
