LITHIA - With a decisive 7-1 victory over a normally hard-hitting Land O'Lakes team, Newsome earned its first berth in the state final four.

Newsome put Land O' Lakes on its heels with a five-run second.

Meghan Schultz started the rally by beating out a throw to first after striking out but getting a passed ball. Ally Ledenham followed with a base on balls to put runners on first and second with no outs.

Newsome pitcher Ashley Stubbs hit a long drive almost to the centerfield fence and the ball was bobbled, allowing all three runners to score.

After an out, Danielle Garcia walked to first and moved to third on a pair of errors that put Laura Lovell on second. Dani Perera singled to drive Garcia home and Jamie O'Hara hit a sacrifice fly to deep left to push Lovell across for a 5-0 lead.

Newsome added runs in the fourth and sixth for the win.

"It seems like few teams took us serious this year, so maybe we are a Cinderella team, " Newsome coach Jessica Kowal said. "Our bats were solid again tonight, and Ashley did a super job for us on the mound.

In her last two starts, Stubbs (13-4) shut out the defending state champs from Auburndale and held a potent Gator team to two hits and an unearned run.

"I heard what a hard-hitting team Land O' Lakes has and I was nervous, " Stubbs said. "But this is our home field, and I made up my mind we should be in control."
