SEMINOLE - With several former Seminole players looking on, including Shawn Keill, the Warhawks demonstrated a knack for timely hitting, pitching and fielding in beating Lakewood Ranch 6-4.
After Warhawks ace Billy Falasco allowed a single to start the seventh, Craig "Lefty" Smith came on in relief. Smith got two quick outs, allowed a run-scoring single, then faced Lakewood Ranch slugger Jon Griffin, who had a three-run homer off Falasco in the sixth. Smith induced Griffin into a flyout to right to end the game.
"For a second, when he was coming to the plate, I was like, 'Uh oh.' " said Falasco, who allowed five hits and two walks and struck out five. "But I knew the way Lefty pitches with the way his pitches break, that we'd be okay."
The Warhawks (22-5) gave their senior captain a 6-0 lead with a run in the first, two in the third and three in the fifth. In the fifth, Bryant Gibson's two-out double to right made it 4-0. With two on, Jay Taylor hit a high grounder to shortstop Andy Slowik, who threw high to first base, allowing two runners to score.
