Judge: Trial will make no one happy
By JOHN BARRY

An Aug. 21 trial has been set for Jessica Rasdall, a University of South Florida freshman who killed her childhood friend Laura Gorman, an Eckerd College freshman, while driving drunk last year.
"When this is over, everybody is going leave here very, very angry, " Pinellas-Pasco Circuit Judge Timothy Peters told the parents of both girls Tuesday. Rasdall's parents have begged for leniency; Gorman's parents have demanded a 15-year prison sentence.
"No escape, " an April 8 Times story about the girls, both 18 at the time of the Feb. 25, 2006, accident, prompted responses from hundreds of readers who debated whether prison or leniency best served justice. Since the crash, Rasdall has spoken to more than 2, 000 area students at anti-DUI rallies, confessing to driving drunk and expressing remorse.
Rasdall's attorney, Tim Hessinger, said he will negotiate directly with State Attorney Bernie McCabe for a plea deal. Under state guidelines for driving under the influence manslaughter, Rasdall faces 10 to 15 years in prison. Hessinger wants Rasdall declared a "youthful offender, " which would make her eligible for a reduced sentence ranging from probation to six years in prison.
The judge said he doesn't expect the lawyers to reach an agreement. "I don't see any common ground anywhere, " he said. "Ultimately, it will come down to me. I'll have to made the hard choice."

The gormans need to stop punishing their daughters best friend, they both made poor decisions that night and if they are to nieve to realize that then they shouldn't have been able to adopt another girl. I am apalled by their eye for an eye view.

The eternal punishment that Jessica has to face every morning as she starts a new day is punishment enough. If Jessica is allowed to continue telling her story to students and it saves 1 life it is worth it all. Please Judge do no send her to prison.

There should be a law against being a passenger in a car with an intoxicated driver. Laura should have taken the keys away from Jessica!!
I think 10-15 years is extreme. Maybe 10-15 years community servive (lecturing to teens)would be good for all

Florida prison system is a torture chamber, a fate worse than death. No mercy and the unforgiveness of the hardliners will keep they themselves in bitterness and the land of the 'unforgiven' forever.

Prison is not going to bring someone's daughter back. I could agree on maybe a year or two in prison, but more will come of if jessica would speak out against drunk driving and teach other teens

If any of you haven't lost a family member in this exact way, you have NO CLUE what U r talking about! Break the law and kill someone = PRISON! 10-15yrs is nothing to ask for the life that is over forever.

Why destroy another life. These girls were best friends. Jessica may have been driving, but Laura made her choice also. Jessica will live with this her entire life. More can come from Jessica speaking out about this tragedy and may save other lives.

I was a friend of both girls. I believe one life has already been destroyed, shouldnt we try to safe the one that is left. Jessica has been punished enough. Jessica may have been driving, but Laura made the choice to ride with her. save jessica

What Gorman's parents don't seem to want to admit is that their daughter evaluated the situation and got in the car with Jessica Rasdall. As sad as this situation is, Laura Gorman made the decision to ride with her friend. They should show mercy.

Sometimes "sorry" isn't enough. Actions have consequences, remorse is good but great weight must be given to the opinions of the VICTIM's family.

If the girls were in the car together, both are at fault. It doesn't matter which one is driving. Who is to say the one that died wasn't driving drunk on a previous night?

Remorse is easy when jailtime is on the line. This lady needs to be held accountable. I say at least 6 years. And drinking under the age? Slap another couple years onto her sentence. What is wrong with teens these days? I didn't drink until 21
