Round the County in 30 Days

A team-by-team look at Hillsborough County spring football.

Published May 3, 2007

Coach: Sean Callahan (18th season, 131-66)

2006 record: 11-2 (lost to Plant, 38-20, in Class 4A region semifinals)

District opponents: Freedom, Middleton, Hillsborough, Tampa Bay Tech

Jamboree date/opponent: May 17 vs. Newsome (at Plant City)

Who's gone: QB Justin Hickman, DE Torrey Davis, FB Marquise Branton, ATH Deondre Kyles, K/P Darren de Rochemont

Who's back: MLB Petey Smith, TB Eric Smith, DE Sergio Joyner, DE Ryne Giddins, OL Juan Gorostiaga, FS Angelo Hadley

What's new: The offense, to a degree. To maximize the versatility of new QB Mywan Jackson, Callahan has agreed to insert the shotgun into his triple-option attack. Callahan says Jackson, a converted receiver, runs like ex-Hawks QB Jameel Williams and throws like Hickman, who started the past two seasons. ...Division I prospect Matt Patchan's transfer from Freedom gives Armwood arguably the county's best offensive line. Patchan will play left tackle, freeing Gorostiaga - also getting Division I overtures - to slide inside to left guard.

Audibles: "I'm going to really make an effort to it; I haven't in the past. I'm excited about it, too, because of Mywan. ...I think anything new that you do you've got to bring a level of patience." - Callahan on the shotgun

Did you know?: Petey Smith, a first-team Class 4A all-state pick as a sophomore last season, said he weighs about 250 pounds - 20 more than his playing weight in 2006. ...The last time Callahan tried the shotgun, about a decade ago, the ball was snapped over the quarterback's head on the first play. The Hawks didn't try it again.
