Peter Bright helped bring down a ring of pickpockets at the Tampa International Airport. William Traynham made 42 arrests in one Tampa neighborhood, ranging from drug offenses to burglary. These two Carrollwood men are among 14 law enforcement and rescue officers from throughout Hillsborough County who will be honored today at the Tampa Convention Center.

The Our Heroes Luncheon recognizes paid and volunteer officers who, through their everyday performance, distinguish themselves with their heroic acts.

This year's group includes Mike Schaer of Lutz, a Gaither High graduate and Temple Terrace firefighter who organized a baseball tournament to raise money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

Susan Balter, a Hillsborough sheriff's reserve deputy who has lived in Carrollwood for most of her life, will also be honored. Balter responded to a call for volunteer deputies in a local news ad, and has since helped with surveillance, narcotics, search warrants, marine and bike patrol and recruitment.

The luncheon runs from noon to 1:30 and is open to the public. Tickets cost $25, and Mayor Pam Iorio is expected to speak.

Here are the rest of the men and women receiving honors today:

Michael Brown of Temple Terrace: Hillsborough County Fire Rescue Lee McKay Paramedic of the Year.

Steve Owsinski of Temple Terrace: Temple Terrace Police Department Officer of the Year.
