The Times obtained several e-mails from disgruntled boosters last fall and followed up with e-mails to solicit their thoughts now. Here's a sampling of their comments to FSU officials in the fall and to the Times more recently:

To President Wetherell:

Oct. 22, 2006

"Our football program is in a death spiral and only you can rescue it. ... Coach Bowden no longer coaches the Seminoles. He's an executive that is not directly involved in the aspects of the game any longer as is needed in college football today. ... Sir, the emperor has no clothes. Please tell him."

April 20, 2007

"I am thrilled with the changes to the Florida State Seminoles football coaching staff. I believe that Coach Bowden recognized the depth of the problem and took the necessary actions to help FSU return to college football prominence."

Col. Alan Northrup, United States Air Force, alumnus and booster

To Andy Miller (Seminole Boosters):

Oct. 9, 2006

"I don't have the time, the money or the inclination any longer to watch the miserable performances this team now puts on week after week."

April 18, 2007

"I am most pleased for FSU and for Coach Bowden with the changes Coach has made and I will continue to support FSU football. I expect Coach Bowden to return to the great success he enjoyed at FSU in the '80s through the '90s. I hope he retires in a blaze of football glory; and I am certain, even given the frustrations of the past six years, FSU fans will never forget the wonder years of his coaching tenure at FSU. Bobby Bowden should not leave FSU on any other terms."

J. Scott Hauser

Season-ticket holder and booster for more than 20 years.

To President Wetherell:

Oct. 6, 2006

"I am a season-ticket holder and a 20-plus year booster. Contribute to special projects. But not another cent of support in any manner. I will drop my seats I have had for 20 years and stop all contributions in all programs unless the coaching staff is completely changed. ... Please save our beloved football program. You are the only one that can. Let Coach finish out the year and start a search now."

April 18, 2007

"I like the direction the new coaching staff has begun. With discipline and attitude toward being in shape and playing as a team. I think Coach Bowden did what was needed and more importantly what he had to do. I like the way they have become more proactive in recruiting and are now getting the early commitments, which has not been the case in the past. I have renewed my season tickets and have paid my booster pledge. For the first time in a long time, I'm excited and can't wait for the new season to begin."

Larry Shepherd, booster

To President Wetherell:

Oct. 23, 2006

"I feel remorse in sending this, but we need a coaching change. All the alums I am in contact (with) feel the same. Coach Bowden did a magnificent job building the program from the time when we were students, but the recent results are a disaster. Big-time football is a two-edged sword. Success brings the school recognition and contributions; failure does the opposite. The downward spiral cannot continue. Consider what Urban Meyer has achieved at UF."

April 20, 2007

"I am waiting to see how things go with the new assistant coaches. I don't believe that the talent level has been the problem. ... I dropped my season tickets and reduced Booster level contribution. ... I am now contributing to my high school."

John Kelly, alumnus and booster

To President Wetherell:

Oct. 24, 2006

"We respect Coach Bowden but have become so disillusioned by the lack of offensive production we feel that he must be held accountable."

April 21, 2007

"We feel Coach Bowden held himself accountable and made the changes that were good for the program. ... We're proud of our Coach, our program and our alma mater."

Ed and Donna Borowski, alumni
