Is it a myth that ostriches stick their heads into the sand to look for water? Yes. Sometimes, when trying to hide from predators, ostriches lie flat with their necks extended. Seen from a distance, it might look as if the head is in a hole, but it isn't. When the head is near the ground - when eating for instance - it may also look like what you see depicted in cartoons.
