Editor's note: The following is a recap of the week's news events, in the words of the newsmakers.

"It was supposed to be my honeymoon and now my baby's dead."

Jennifer Brittin, whose 9-year-old son, Curtis Bashaw Jr., died suddenly Wednesday evening, the day before Brittin and her spouse were to leave on a belated honeymoon.

 

"I want the rest of the council to know that I am in favor of immediate termination of attorney David La Croix's contract with the city of Brooksville. I can no longer base any legal decision I make on any legal advice that he gives me."

Brooksville City Council member Richard Lewis, calling for La Croix's ouster because of the way that La Croix handled the city's separation agreement with police Chief Ed Tincher.

 

"I want to mend fences and build bridges. That's what's important to me."

Paul Boston, organizer of the Juneteenth celebration in Brooksville, who sees the event as a way to improve relations between the city and the African-American community.

 

"I hope the city doesn't change. What I see out there is a very charming place to live, do business and have fun."

Mitchell Bobowski, newly selected city manager of Brooksville, giving his outlook for the city.

 

"The old locals were very surprised when they started developing out there. You couldn't have given away that land when I was a kid."

Judge Dan Merritt Sr., a Brooksville native, on reactions when developers began building Spring Hill in the 1960s.

 

"Bluegrass people are friendly people, no matter where you go. You pull into a camping spot in your RV and the next thing you know the strangers camping next to you aren't strangers anymore."

Louise Jennings, self-described bluegrass diehard, on the culture that surrounds the distinctive music.

 

"I'm just so proud of her. She's taught me that in education, you're never too old."

Louis Wermann, who took a full-time job to help his mother, Margaret Wermann, get her degree from Pasco-Hernando Community College.
