Bucs rookie starting over
Nebraska quarterback Zac Taylor tries to make a quick impression after setting school records.
By Stephen F. Holder
Published May 7, 2007
TAMPA - After leaving Butler County Community College in Kansas, Zac Taylor headed for the big time with big plans.
At Nebraska, he dreamed of becoming a Cornhusker hero at quarterback, wearing the same colors as so many legends before him.
Then, his grand plan detoured when he found himself one of six quarterbacks on the roster.
"It's kind of the story of my career, " said Taylor, an undrafted rookie free agent hoping to overcome similarly long odds with the Bucs.
"Everywhere I've gone I've had to work my way up."
That mission was accomplished at Nebraska, where Taylor became the school's career leader in passing yards 5, 850, touchdown passes (45) and completions (470). He was named Big 12 offensive player of the year last season.
Now, things have come full circle for Taylor. As he began his tenure during weekend rookie camp, he became the seventh quarterback in the Bucs' seemingly never ending collection. That list includes disgruntled Jake Plummer, who seems unlikely to report, and long shot Bruce Eugene, who is playing in Europe and probably won't last until training camp.
Still, it's a long list. Taylor likely will compete with Bruce Gradkowski and Luke McCown for the No. 3 spot. Considering what he is facing, this question arises: why sign with the Bucs if other teams were interested?
"Coach (Jon) Gruden just really made me feel wanted, " Taylor said. "I met him last year and he and (Nebraska coach Bill) Callahan are good friends, so I knew what kind of guy he was. And he's great with quarterbacks. I'll get the best coaching."
Perhaps the only thing Gruden loves more than life itself is quarterbacks. So, rarely does he have an unkind word to say about one. Still, he seems genuinely excited about Taylor's potential.
"You're not the Big 12 offensive player of the year for no reason, " Gruden said. "This guy's obviously been well-schooled. Bill Callahan's a great coach. They do a lot of things on offense at Nebraska and (Taylor) is the reason why. He can handle a lot of football and he can make a lot of plays with his arm and with his anticipation and with his mind, honestly."
But Taylor will have a lot working against him. He admits to lacking tantalizing physical attributes - the big arm, the chiseled Brady Quinn physique, the fleet feet - which make quarterbacks attractive on draft day. Though listed at 6 feet 2 and 216 pounds, he isn't imposing. But Taylor, who turns 24 Thursday, has always found a way to compensate, largely because the self-described cerebral player immerses himself in his craft.
"Well, don't look at my grades, but on the football field, yes, I've been (a heady player), " Taylor said. "I've had to be. I don't have a whole lot of physical tools. The only way I've gotten to play is by staying ahead of the other guys."
He has a shot at keeping pace because the Bucs' offense in many ways mirrors the one he ran under Callahan, Gruden's former offensive coordinator with the Raiders. After the draft Taylor was sorting out his next move. Callahan called, asking which teams had extended invitations. When Callahan learned Tampa Bay was among them, he nudged Taylor toward the Bucs because he saw the offense as the best fit.
"The main thing is this offense is what I'm used to, " Taylor said. "I wanted to go somewhere I was comfortable and not have to start over."
That's pretty much all the past three days of rookie camp was for Taylor: a start. But what matters more to him is where all this ends.
"Coach Gruden is giving me a shot, " Taylor said. "If I do well, it won't matter whether I got drafted or not."

Look at who Tampa has, Zac knows and has shown he can run the Gruden offense. Simms hasn't proved anything, Garcia is old, Zac will start in 2 years.

Having read all of the comments posted here, the disrespect for Nebraska seems to transcend what is being discussed. Will taylor suceed, I think he will, He is the best QB to come out of NU for 25 yrs. Good luck in TB.

Great kid - doesn't have the arm strength for the NFL though. Look at the Big 12 championship game in the cold. Picked off throwing to wide open guys because he didn't have the zip. I wish him luck because he was the QB we needed last two years.

I heard that Darryl Lamonica and George Blanda were about to sign free agent deals with TB. C'mon, the only thing Mr. Gruden knows less about than talent is character! These aren't football cards-DEVELOP SOMEONE

I've been a Nebraska Football fan forever, and Taylor is absolutley the toughest player i've ever seen. I've got my doubts about him making it in the NFL, but nobody will try harder.

Oh gees, Zac Taylor with the Bucs. Zac is there because the coach for Nebraska has an Oakland Raider connection. I would have preferred Jordan Palmer. Zac Taylor was mediocre in college. Good luck beating out two more stiffs. YUK!!!

Zac would be well advised to get a degree in accounting or some other non contact profession.

To anyone who thinks Zac can't win big games, just watch the Nebraska-Michigan Alamo Bowl. He got clobbered all night and still had enough guts to get the offense into the end zone at the end when it counted. One tough hombre!

Here Iam again a football nut. I think bringing in at Tampa will give the coaching staff a chance to evaulate this young man in all sorts of sistutations. Tampa bay can sit back and see if this individual could be used down the road in Tampa.

Taylor knows how to get the job done. Just because he didnt win any big games in lincoln dosen't mean he wont be a great NFL qb.

And for the ignorant that have asked what big games has Zac won--well, @ Texas A&M and the 2005 Alamo Bowl against Michigan are two big games that he's done rather well in.

I saw Zac in many games at Big Red. This kid is tough as nails and very QB 'brainy'. He can light up the Secondary before, during & after getting pounded. There's no quit in this kid. He's Pro Bowl material in 5 years.

Zac Taylor is a smart, hard working player with mental and physical toughness. He has been fun to watch at Nebraska. We will be pulling for him to make it in the NFL. We believe Tampa got a good deal. Go Zac!

One thing that hasn't been talked about as much was his ability to take big hits in college, he is definitely a tough kid physically and mentally... that's a good foundation for a quality NFL quarterback.

Zac has his nose under the tent, now if he can just make the team in third spot he will have a good shot.
This was the right team for him.

Zac is just like another Qb hero, Brook Berringer. Very tough and smart. Alike in many ways. I am happy to see him get a shot at the NFL. Hope he finds a home at Tampa.

Give Zac some time & he will impress even the biggest of naysayers. He is one of the top 3 none drafted players with a legitimate shot at being more than a bench warmer or scout team player. Sooner bred who played Husker RED!

Zac has more heart and determination than most QB's. Plus, you won't find a nicer guy who will stay out of trouble and be active in the community. He is just very football savvy.

There has been a many outstanding quarterbacks at Neb. Zac I think will go down has the favorite. In 05 coming off of a 5-6 seasons. Neb got 8 wins and beat a more talented Mich team. Mostly on the shoulders of Zac.

Both the Cornhuskers and Bucs have had up and down years and Zac brought the Huskers back into play again after some down years. I'm exicted that he has a chance with the Bucs and Gruden is not giving him a chance for no reason. Zac has potential!

I have watched Zac for the past two years at Nebraska. The Bucs got a gem of a Quarterback for no $$$ at all. Great Pickup for the Bucs.

Taylor worked very hard here at Nebraska and should work very hard down there. He has everything a team wants in a QB. Great story and I hope to read more about him.
