SEMINOLE - An unidentified man died Monday night after Pinellas County sheriff's deputies shot him with a Taser following a car chase.

The man's death ended a bizarre series of events that included an unrelated abduction, a ramming of police cruisers and then a slow chase through the Oakhurst neighborhood of Seminole, sheriff's spokesman Jim Bordner said.

Bordner was still piecing together details late Monday night and could not identify the man's name or age.

Earlier in the evening, deputies had arrested a man in an armed abduction. That man told deputies that he had thrown a gun into the Intracoastal Waterway while driving between Indian Rocks Beach and the mainland on State Road 688.

While searching for the gun under the bridge about 8 p.m., a deputy noticed a man in a Dodge pickup "behaving erratically, flailing his arms, " Bordner said.

The deputy called for backup and two more cruisers arrived. As three deputies walked toward the truck, the man rammed two cruisers, smashed into a fence and then backed up again. At that point, two of the deputies fired their guns at the truck because it was a threat to them, Bordner said.

The pickup got out from under the bridge and headed east on Walsingham Road. The deputies could not follow because two cruisers were disabled and a third was blocked, Bordner said. However, another deputy, responding to a radio description of the events, spotted a truck with no headlights, with front end damage and smoke spewing out.

Several deputies chased that truck at 35 to 45 mph until it drove onto a lawn in a residential area at 137th Street and Antigua Drive.

When the driver ignored orders to turn the truck off, deputies broke at least two windows with batons and shot him with a Taser. As they took him out of the truck, Bordner said, "they noticed he was in medical distress" and called paramedics, who took him to a hospital, where he died.

Bordner declined to identify any of the deputies involved, saying the agency has begun an investigation. None of the deputies were injured, he said.

So much excited delirium, so few tasers.

Seems to me some people think the police are the bad guys. Let's just do away with them then see where things go. If you don't want to get roughed up, stop running from the cops.

need to do more traing for the police to put them down and restrain them but some cops like to keep tasering more than once those are, are bad cop's. Playing god! Or just plan rough police officers becouse they wear a badge. And there are alot of bad

Doesn't sound like a 'scuffle'. Sounds like an all out attack.

JB, why is it that the police trying to stop this man and he dies is senseless, but him ramming police cars and running from the police, that's okay? Should they just let him drive around crashing into things?

Thankfully, no law enforcement was injured. If anyone here complaining about the actions of law enforcement had this nut in their front yard, guess who they would be calling? Knock it off people. You take the bad guys down next time, okay?

please dont blame this on the police. Were you there? You weren't. Then shut up.

Thats what you get when you run from the police.

It amazes me how many times the police are in grave danger and facing certain death, yet the last line of the story is always the same. Suspect Dead / No Deputies Injured. There definately seems to be a re-occuring theme here.

Are you kidding me... senseless killing?? He almost killed two other deputies. Wow, it is a sad day when we stick up for criminals and not the people who risk their lives for us every day!! Wake up!

I would like to receive the results of the autopsy report, as well as the names of the deputies involved in this case because of personal-related reasons. Thank you.

You would not print this before , how about now? "Yet another TASER death" Some form of non-lethal weaponry, huh?
by Paul 05/08/07 12:04 PM
Lets see..the deputies left their vehicles and approached the truck/the truck then rams the vehicles-meaning the deputies were fairly close and feared for their lives..Two of them open fire and neither one hits the guy ? Thank God for no bystanders.

Why am I not surprised? "Pinellas County's Finest" has committed another senseless killing. When will it end?
by Local Resident 05/08/07 08:24 AM
Low speed pursuit? They seemed to be going much faster than 45 mph looking for him.
