Millions spent; none for justice
By A TIMES EDITORIAL
Published May 9, 2007
Florida legislators could not find the compassion in their hearts or the money in their state budget to compensate Alan Crotzer for spending more than 24 years in prison for a crime he did not commit. Doing the right thing would have required earmarking just $1.25-million for Crotzer in a $71.9-billion spending plan. That would have followed federal guidelines that say people who are wrongly imprisoned should get $50, 000 a year for every year spent in prison.
Senators who blocked the payment to Crotzer cited all sorts of excuses, including financial constraints. That's odd. Legislators had no such qualms about spending a similar amount of money for all sorts of projects they can brag about back home.
A sampling:
- $1-million each: Miami Beach storm water project, Arcadia rodeo complex.
- $1.25-million: Mallory dock improvements in Key West.
- $1.3-million: Las Olas Boulevard streetscape in Fort Lauderdale.
- $1.5-million each: Land and facilities acquisitions for Polk Community College, Citrus County Fairgrounds improvements, Hillsborough County stormwater project, national marketing for Enterprise Florida, rowing training center in Melbourne.
- $1.8-million: Resurfacing Cleveland Street in Clearwater.
- $2-million each: Enhance training and the production of skilled workers to support the construction industry, Highlands County fairgrounds agricultural convention center, military base protection.
There is a slice of the budget pie for virtually everyone and every purpose. But there is nothing for Alan Crotzer, who is still waiting for the state of Florida to do what's right.

Pay the man NOW. If the legislators need to worry about where they'll find the money, let me suggest it come directly out of the budget for the district attorney's office that wrongly convicted him.

I wonder how many years the anti-compensation crowd would be willing to spend in prison (getting knifed, beaten and strip-searched) for $1.25 million. Bet it would fall far short of 24-1/2 years, over half of Mr. Crotzer's life. And he was INNOCENT.

I do not think Mr. Crotzer should be given $, but it has NOTHING to do w/ race. If I was accused of a crime and spent 1 Million $ defending myself and was found innocent, does the State pay me back for falsely accusing me?? No. So, I oppose the $$

Shameful. This man deserves compensation. Nothing will replace the lost years.

Heartless and gutless people. You who disagree that this man needs to be compensated should be ashamed. Is the race card being played again?

Is loss of liberty at the wrongful hands of the state without value to Americans. If we're going to run an imperfect legal system, we ought to compensate our victims. I am ashamed of our leaders and us. Isn't innocence proof of worthiness?

Looks like the State is trying to out pork the local GOVT's. Mr. Cotzer's situation begs the the question of why we don't as a society compensate victims of crime that traumatically changes victim or results in death. Does it matter if state did it?

How many times is the Times going to grace us with an editorial about Mr. Crotzer?? We know you don't think what was done was fair, but neither was doing nothing to help our insurance or tax rates. Besides, the FL Congress is on break. Give us one!

judges and juries make imperfect decisions every day. As a state, are we to provide remuneration to every person so wronged? Crotzer has not implied discrimination or other injury to his civil rights. The jury screwed up. So he gets millions?

WHY NOT START A BANK ACCOUNT FOR MR. CROTZER. IF EVERY FAMILY IN FLORIDA WOULD JUST KICK $1, HE'D HAVE SOMETHING RATHER THAN WAIT FOR THE STATE TO ACT.
