What is the function of the Poynter Institute? -Al, Palm Harbor In 1975, St. Petersburg Times board chairman Nelson Poynter established the Modern Media Institute renamed the Poynter Institute for Media Studies after his death in 1978 as a nonprofit educational institution to teach and research journalism. Poynter willed controlling stock of Times Publishing Co. to the institute to assure the continued independence of the St. Petersburg Times after his death.
