City waives fees for Juneteenth celebration

Published May 9, 2007

City Council late Monday agreed to waive thousands of dollars in fees and costs to help the organizers put on the upcoming Juneteenth Celebration, June 13 through 17 at Russell Street Park. Event chairman Paul Boston voiced some frustration at the city during the council's lengthy discussion. "All of this could have been done months ago, " he argued. "You're talking about my dignity now." But council members told Boston they were trying to get a dollar figure so they would know how much the city's help would cost. Mayor David Pugh predicted the cost waiver, which would include police and fire aid, use of the city's comfort station and availability of city water, could top $4, 000.
