  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

Here's your can't-miss list

Face it, you'll never see all there is to see at Tropical Heatwave, but try to plan your night around these bands.

Tropical Heatwave is fun, but intense, as 30-plus bands, spread out over three venues and myriad stages, all play during one wild night. You can't catch everyone (don't even think about it, hot stuff), so here are five shows to help you plan your night:

WAITIKI (6-7:05 p.m. in the Cuban Club Courtyard) This Boston-based group is all about "exotic tiki-tainment" from the umbrella-drink madness of Polynesia. Expect enthusiastic playing (including some cha-cha-cha Esquivel big band), swell dancing - and a storm of plastic leis raining down on your pretty little head.

TROMBONE SHORTY AND ORLEANS AVENUE (8:55-10:05 in the Cuban Club Courtyard): At just 21, New Orleans phenom Troy "Trombone Shorty" Andrews has a mantel full of awards and accolades honoring his muscular blend of funk, hip-hop and blissful Crescent City jazz. He'll no doubt improve your mood quicker than back-to-back mojitos.

ZILLIONAIRE (10:30-11:15 in the New World Brewery): Expect lots of cool, extremely attractive hipsters nodding their swell hairdos at this gig by the local "mood rock" supergroup. Zillionaire is made of players from such notable bay area acts as Pohgoh and the Washdown.

DOLL PARTS (11:30-12:20 in the Orpheum Club) and then GIRLS ON FILM (12:40 to close): Fueled by switchblade beats, the four-piece Doll Parts is a cross between the Ramones and a packet of Pixy Stix. The glam-rockers in Girls on Film, on the other hand, are all about their inspiration: Duran Duran, New Wave and randy synths. A great way to end (or start) your night.
