Duke University's Seventh-Grade National Talent Search honored high achieving seventh-graders. From West Hernando: Clifford Anello; Powell Middle: Slayton Westwood, Hanna Smith; Notre Dame: Donovan Lovelock; Fox Chapel Middle: Jacob Dewar; Gulf Coast Academy: Cory Jackson, Emily Gustafson; Challenger: Linda Gross, Olivia Sperry, Jaret Dawson, Aniqa Hatem, Jacob Gibson, John Stratton, Jacob Behm, Jordan Enders, Daniel Bystry-Wells.


Chamber awards scholarships

At the Greater Hernando County Chamber of Commerce's annual honor student banquet, Central High's Stephen White received a $1, 000 Kiwanis scholarship, Hernando High student Kim Patel received a $500 Manzi Metal scholarship and West Hernando Christian School's Jordan Cheek received a $500 Chamber of Commerce scholarship.

French student wins award

Senior Heather Whisler was named a National Award Winner in foreign language (French) by the United States Achievement Academy. USAA winners are selected by academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities and responsibility. Heather was nominated by her French teacher, Bonnie Clark.

Travel the globe at school celebration

The school's campus becomes a celebration of international cultures later this month. Students present sights, sounds, tastes and aromas of 66 countries. General activities: May 23, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m., and May 24, 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 to 6 p.m. Food festival May 24, 6 to 6:40 p.m.

Brooksville Elementary

For Arbor Day, a tribute to trees

Brooksville celebrated Arbor Day at Tom Varn Park. Two fifth-graders from Hernando Christian Academy, Marina Valadez and Brad Ortiz, wrote and read essays for the occasion. They were awarded gift certificates.

Honors for athletic achievement

Sports awards will be presented Monday at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Parents Night of Excellence for sixth and seventh grades is Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m., and May 18 at 6 p.m. for eighth grade.

School will salute students Tuesday

Salute to Students Award Night is Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. in the gym.

Build robots at summer camp
