Scores drop quite a bit throughout the county

Published May 11, 2007
For the first time in months, there were no U.S. Bowling Congress major accomplishments in the county this week.
Amy Weakland led all reported female series with her 610. The 600 series was the only one reported with Anita Hearl coming in second with 587. Both series occurred on the same night in the same league at Spring Hill Lanes. Weakland and Hearl each shot high scratch series in the Gator High Rollers League on Monday night.
Hearl is a regular to the column and continues to shoot well week after week. This is Weakland's first time leading the county with her series. Last season, in her first year competing in sanctioned competition, she averaged 163 between the Friday Primetimers and TGIF leagues.
This season she has equaled that mark in the Gator High Rollers.
Steve Ferriero distanced himself and his high series from the rest of the county field among the men. His 756 was better than Jimmy Robinson's 740 in the Thursday Night Mixed League at Spring Hill.
Ferriero accomplished his series during the Monday Night Men's League at Spring Hill. The series was led by a 277 high game, which narrowly missed making the top five high scores for the county this week. In the recently finished season for the Wednesday Night Mixers, Ferriero's other league this year, the veteran bowler averaged 208 in 93 games.
He is no stranger to success with a handful of USBC accomplishments under his belt. Most recently, he tossed 11 consecutive strikes in a game for a 290. That game was thrown in January 2006 during the Gator High Rollers League. He has one sanctioned perfect game, pitched on April 24, 2000.
ROTARY BENEFIT: Spring Hill Lanes will host the fifth annual Bowling Benefit on May 20 at 1 p.m. All proceeds will go to Rotary Charities and Hernando County service projects.
The primary goal for this season is to raise enough money to help finish Rotary Centennial Park, part of which includes Hernando County's first dog park. In the previous four installments of the benefit, the Rotary raised more than $24, 000 for charitable projects in the area.
More than $2, 000 in prizes will be awarded. Entry fees for a team of four is $100. For a fee of $50, a local business can sponsor a lane at the gala, including a sign with the business name to be displayed throughout the day.
