Artyukhin wants trade; GM Feaster stands firm
The power forward, according to his agent, has rejected Tampa Bay's one-year offer and signed to play another season in Russia.

At its core, the dispute between the Lightning and Evgeny Artyukhin is about money.
The power forward, according to agent Mark Gandler, has rejected Tampa Bay's one-year, $475, 000 offer and signed to play another season in Russia, this time with Avangard Omsk.
But Gandler said Thursday that by offering the league minimum salary, general manager Jay Feaster wanted to punish Artyukhin for turning down offers before last season.
He said he has asked his client's rights be traded.
"I am surprised the team continued to build up the anger that was there a year ago, but now it's kind of busting through the seams, " Gandler said. "The offer in itself is proof of that anger. The punishment aspect of the offer is so obvious, it hits you right in the forehead."
Feaster did not hide his anger in August when Artyukhin turned down a one-year, $600, 000 contract and a two-year deal with salaries of $500, 000 and $700, 000.
He did not hide his consternation Thursday. "Clearly, " he said, "our current offer has nothing to do with anger or punishment."
Artyukhin, 24, could be a valuable addition for a team trying to improve its toughness. The 6-foot-4, 254-pounder is a punishing hitter, and had 90 penalty minutes in 77 games for Tampa Bay in 2005-06.
Whispers were Artyukhin wanted up to $1-million for 2006-07. Instead, he signed with Russia's Yaroslavl Lokomotiv and had five goals, 13 points and 183 penalty minutes in 44 games.
Feaster said the disappointing season factored into his offer, which he said is final:
"Our concern is being a full year removed from the NHL and playing our system, we have to spend training camp and the first two months of the season breaking old habits. We're going to have to spend time inculcating him to the way we want him to play instead of getting a player who advanced his career."
Still, hopes were high.
"But in this case, the offer made was significantly lower than the one presented to us a year ago, " said Gandler, who would not disclose what his client got from Omsk.
"And the punishment element. You've got to prove yourself. You've got to, as they say, shut your yapper and show up. ... Basically, he is not going to crawl back into the locker room and ask forgiveness of some people."
With little hope of reconciliation, Gandler said, "I would love for them to trade Evgeny, " who is not an unrestricted free agent until summer 2009.
Feaster called the request a non-starter. "I will not, " he said, "allow a player to dictate how we manage the hockey club."

Typical Russian Hockey player. We don't really want a guy like this on our team. Disloyal, greedy, and not even a star yet. Imagine if he ever had a great season.Let him suffer in Russia til 09, then let someone else take a chance on him. RIP, Arty

Who would want to trade for this clown? Why don't we ask Mike Babcock (the Red Wing's coach) if he would give us his dog for that guy.

Feaster is right in every aspect of this fiasco that we call Artyukhin. Exactly how did Arty prove that he was worth more than what the Lightning offered him? He didnt really. He wasted his time going back to Russia..now he's wasting his time with us

Another Feasterian brilliancy: small-minded; narrow-thinking; and, pettily vindictive. Now there is no path to a solution other than to trade rights to Artyukhin. Appartently, the corpulent GM's big singular primary skill is ordering in restaurants.

5 goals, 13 points, 183 penalty minutes in Russia? What am I missing? What is the stat or quality that makes him so valuable? I don't mind any player posturing for the bst deal, but what does he have to offer to improve the team? Penalty minutes?

Evgeny does not wish to accept the Bolt's offer because he feels its too low (and, it isn't going to get any higher); so, he'll play in Russia. The Lightning get NOTHING at all from this. They need to either trade the rights for Artyukin or pay him.

I can't beleive Artyukin is making any money in Russia. No matter how much he makes, the Russia mob still get's about half of his salary.

Artyukin was a cancer in the locker room when he was here. Even though the coaches loved his game, they were concerned about his demeanor off the ice. Many players raised questions about his committment.Let him rot in Russia.

R2 was hottttttttt, steaming with talent his rookie season. And then got greedy, went to russia, and stunk it up, now want more money and nice treatment. He could be the next modin for our franchise, but his attitude is terrible. Go rot in russia.

Tarnasky has a better shot and skates just as well. the bolts need a hard ass blue liner that can scare a winger to crossing the line. start with toughness at the blue line them move foward. that will help the net minders.

Trade him, get goalie. Plus they just re-signed Ward. TB needs more players like him, not R2.

You folks seem mighty ready to dump on a guy who is simply trying to negotiate the best deal for himself-which is what you would do and instruct your agent to do given the opportunity. We don't have hot prospects; this guy would help. Be fair Jay.

This guy definately aint needed. We have good power forwards--Nick Tarnasky, Jason Ward, and Roy.
Im happy Feaster's not signing him. However, what we really need is someone to help 19 out there on the 2nd line.

I can't imagine EA giving his all with his current attitude and demands. Hope Jay will stand his ground; there are enough hot prospects who would give what teeth they have left to play with TBL.

Arty is a good player, but he really shot himself in the foot by leaving the NHL in the first place. He should fire his so-called agent, he isn't doing him any favors! What was he expecting leaving the NHL after only 1 year to go sit on a bench?!

Disagree they should give up on R2. He's young but what raw talent. Getting bad advice from his agent. He just needs fine tuning, the talent is there. Fans, stop thinking like Torts and Feaster. Look where their attitude got us.

Tampa has the same type of player in Ward, with the exception that he wants to play here. Trade him in a package deal and get a goalie or a physical left winger who can score, like Modin. Feaster is wasting his time with EA. Build the 2nd line, Jay.

You guys are targeting the wrong person in this ordeal. No, Artoo isn't worth the money he's demanding. Yes, Jay Feaster is taking the proper stance. But it's Artoo's AGENT who is the problem. He's got a reputation for doing this stuff.

Is this guy any different than Nick Tarnasky? In my opinion they play the same game. What do the Lightning need this clown for? He can't finish whenhe has a wide open net and we need a power forward that can.

What a prima donna. The only thing he has proven is that he only cares about $$. He obviously has not gotten the hint that this club is looking for character guys. I'm sure guys like Perrin,St. Louis, and Craig don't respect this move. Rot away R2!

The last sentence is contested by the $7.8 Million Man. The statement is patently false.
Evegeny just doesn't get it. Why put this bonehead in our sweater?
Agents are parasites.
