Lemonade stand fundraiser aids cancer research

SPRING HILL

The Mother's Club of Hernando County will host Alex's Lemonade Stand on May 19 at these locations:

- 8 a.m. to noon, Veterans Memorial Park, 12254 Spring Hill Drive.

- 2 to 6 p.m., Wal-Mart Supercenter, 13300 Cortez Blvd.

All funds raised will go to Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, a national foundation that raises money for pediatric cancer research. For information, call Anne Westrom at 688-4110.

Share your thoughts at book discussion

The Hernando County Public Library will host its monthly Spring Hill book discussion group at 10 a.m. May 22 at the Spring Hill Branch/Harold G. Zopp Memorial Library, 9220 Spring Hill Drive.

The book to be discussed is One Thousand White Women: The Journals of Mary Dodd, by Jim Fergus. Copies of the book are available at the library. For information, call 754-4866.

Certification offered for food managers

A food managers certification course and ServSafe certification test will be offered May 23 at the Hernando County Cooperative Extension Service, 19490 Oliver St.

Training and the exam are $100; the manual is $40. Training will be from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., followed by the exam.

There is no "exam only" option, and walk-ins will not be admitted.

Certification is required in Florida for food managers of all establishments licensed by the Department of Business and Professional Regulation, the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services and selected licenses of the Health Department.

All agencies accept the ServSafe certification.

Registration is required by Wednesday. Call the extension office at 754-4433.

History group meeting to cover Captain Pyle

The quarterly meeting of the Old Hernando History Roundtable will be Thursday at John's Corner Family Restaurant, 711 S Broad St.

Lunch will be at 11:30 p.m. A program on Captain Pyle of Citrus County will be presented by Frank Peters at 12:30 p.m.

Learn about long-term care at free seminar

A free informational seminar to discuss the new Partnership-State Long Term Care Insurance Program will be offered at the following locations:

- 6:30 p.m. May 22, at Farm Bureau, 617 Lamar Ave., Brooksville.

- 6:30 p.m. May 23, Oak Hill Hospital, 11375 Cortez Blvd., Spring Hill.

The long-term care insurance program was recently approved by the state of Florida. Under the program, Floridians can now purchase tax-qualified long-term care policies that allow them to protect all or a portion of their assets.

Celebrate Philippine Independence Day

The Hernando County Philippine-American Association will host a 109th Philippine Independence Day picnic from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 9 at Linda Pedersen Park, 6400 Shoal Line Blvd.

There will be no admission charge, but those attending are asked to bring a dish to share. The association will provide hot dogs, hamburgers, Filipino desserts and drinks, as well as games for kids and adults.
