Local gymnasts shine in region meet

At the Region 8 Gymnastics Championships last month in Tupelo, Miss., the Tampa Bay Turners St. Petersburg had a total of 10 Level 9 gymnasts qualify for this weekend's Eastern National Championships.
Seven qualified to compete as members of the regional team, finishing in the top six all-around in their respective age groups, at the Eastern Nationals this weekend in Kissimmee.
Morgan Gunning won the bars and beam and joined teammate Erin Adderley (beam) as an all-around champion. Shelby Hilton won the vault and bars and finished fourth all-around, while Sarah Wolford won the vault and was second in her age division all-around. They joined Alexia Perry, Rachel Coderre and Jordann Windschauer as regional team qualifiers.
Alyssa Collins finished seventh in her Level 10 age group all-around to qualify in the Junior Olympic National Championships on May 19-20 in Mason, Ohio.
LaFleur's Gymnastic Club (Largo) also enjoyed success in Tupelo. In Level 9 competition, Dali Lemezan won three events (vault, beam and floor) en route to an age group all-around title. Teammate Danielle Kazakos also won her all-around, while teammate Sarena Bumbarger was second and Kaley LaFleur was third.
In Level 10 action, LaFleur's Britany Calley won the bars and floor for an all-around victory. Briana Melanda was third in her Level 10 all-around, and Mike LaFleur was named the state's Coach of the Year.
SOCCER: The Clearwater Chargers' 12-and-under girls team won the Florida Youth Soccer Association President's Cup early last month in Pensacola. Finishing the season 32-7-4, the Chargers swept through Region C and President's Cup play, registering a tournament record of 8-0.
Team members were Auburn Mercer, Nikki Naclerio, Kelsey Schuster, Kalli Mullen, Kristi Legoas, Caroline Krueger, Rachel Miller, Kim Stolz, Hannah Jewell and Briana Baugher. The team was coached by Matt King.
TRIATHLON: David Morgan, 14, a swimmer for the Clearwater Aquatic Team, defended his overall title at the St. Anthony's Meek and Mighty Triathlon on April 28 in St. Petersburg. Morgan, competing in his sixth Meek and Mighty, finished the 200-yard swim, 5.4-mile bike ride and 1-mile run in 25 minutes, 26 seconds.

Tampa Bay Angels
The Tampa Bay Angels are forming two scout teams 16U (2009, 2010 grads). They will play tournaments around the state and have a baseball camp with many college coaches from around the state in June. Contact Chris Banks at 727-542-6245 for more information.

Florida State Collegiate League
