Did he strangle cat to be merciful or cruel?
A man faces a felony charge after strangling a stray cat in front of a 10-year-old boy.

TOWN 'N COUNTRY - One stray cat was dead. Another looked Sunday as if it had been poisoned. Gayle Gasque, who had been feeding the strays, thought so. So did a neighbor on Fountainbleau Road, 44-year-old Buddy Lanard Cromwell.
Gasque thought about taking the cat to the vet.
Cromwell had another idea. He walked into the Gasques' yard, picked up the cat and squeezed his hands around the throat until it died, he admits.
"When I saw the thing suffering, " Cromwell said Monday, "I went over and did what I did and it was a mercy."
But Gasque's 10-year-old son saw it all, and the family called the Sheriff's Office.
Cromwell now faces a felony charge of animal torture. He had previously been arrested 20 times on charges of battery, DUI, domestic violence, disorderly conduct, burglary, aggravated assault and resisting arrest.
The Gasques were upset that their son watched the animal die.
"He was just really upset, crying, " said Clinton Gasque, the boy's father. "He wanted the guy to go to jail for murder."
He said he chased Cromwell out of their yard. Cromwell appeared intoxicated, he said.
Animal Services officer Ken Vetzel called the method of death "cruel" and said Cromwell seemed "nonchalant" about what he had done.
Cromwell said another neighbor had told him she poisoned the cats. He said he didn't remember her name.
Vetzel said Animal Services may investigate the poisoning angle further after a necropsy determines whether the cat was also poisoned.

There are many volunteer rescue places you can find online that will rescue cats, get their shots/etc, and find them new homes.

If you have a problem with feral cats, call a local shelter and see if they will trap/spay or neuter/release. Please don't try and take the matter into your own hands as we can see the results of that here - a barbaric act disguised as "mercy".

Kill an animal because it is a stray? You consider it humane that someone strangles an animal? Some of you are sick. Maybe the police should start checking your backyards for bones.

Ann-What gives you that right? Because you do not like cats? Voice of Reason-Humane? Was he qualified as a vet? Are you? Both of you are crazy. He KILLED an animal. Just because it was a stray HE DOES NOT HAVE THE RIGHT!

Don't know about were you live but here if you feed stray animals the city considers them yours. Frankly, the guy should have got rid of the cat out of the eyesight of the neighbors. I probably would have killed it myself to end its suffering.

I wonder what the comments would look like if the stroy described the defendants as "a well-dressed business man who has often given money to charity." It is possible that he did a humane thing, despite his history.

If you are going to feed strays, then take them in as your pet and take them to the vet for proper care. Strays spread diseases. The Gasques were wrong for feeding the strays but then not wanting to be responsible for the cats well-being and care.

Just from previous charges you can tell that this person is sick. How are we even debating whether it as mercy or being cruel?
There is nothing to debate. He should be in jail.

He considers that merciful? Whatever happened to taking it to the Humane Society or SPCA? Why can't people like him be "put out of their misery".

That idiot Cromwell should be choked. What is wrong with our society? It's weirdos like him that make the tv program "Criminal Minds" look real.Even if he knew he traumatized that child, he wouldn't have cared. He did it to be cruel.

What if he was right and another neighbor poisoned the cat? While what he did wasn't right, poisoning is a slow, painful, horrible way to die, and that poor kitty would have suffered far worse.

It was a dying animal. The mother would have paid someone to kill it. Now it is dead. Why is there a problem? Chemical strangulation by lethal injection and manual strangulation are both strangulation. Why/how do you approve of one not other?

This man was not a vet. He was not qualified to make that decision. He just wanted to kill something. He probably has done this before.

This guy should be taken off the streets permanently! This cruelty is just the last in a long history of violence. Maybe, for a change, the justice system will do what they should have done long ago! Please put him away!!!!

It's time that animal cruelty is taken seriously. This intoxicated, trespassing, murderer should be jailed. Considering his history, he's trash. Let's clean up.

That's what they get for letting a criminal like that stay on the streets. With all of his priors what was he doing out?! That child is going to be messed up for good.

He didnt do it as a mercy kill he did it becuase he gets off on watching something small and helpless die. If that man had come on to my property and killed my pet in front of me I would have shot him.

Mr. Cromwell should be held accountable for his barbaric actions. How about some LONG hours working at Animal Services & a BIG monetary contribution to a local animal rescue group? Linda, past President of Gateway Pet Rescue, Blue Ridge, GA

I hope that this guy goes to prison for this crime. Can't we see that there is a pattern here with previous offenses. Look this criminal up. No respect for any life-human or animal.

Fountainbleau Road....must be a classy neighborhood. However, feeding strays is not a good idea either.

Short answer to your question - cruel. Both to the cat and the child. Creep should go to jail for a long, long time before he does the same to some human.

I hope the St. Pete Times will continue to follow this investigation to see if there are any consequences for people who poison and torture animals. I feel for Mr. Gasque, who did the right thing and has to live among at least two demented barbarians
