NORTH MIAMI - Gov. Charlie Crist called it a town hall meeting, but a Monday evening event came across more like an antitax rally.
Crist fired up a crowd of more than 500, most of them Haitian-Americans, by promising that the Legislature will bring tax relief. Audience members here, a place that usually supports Democrats, roared their approval.
Crist has made lowering property taxes a priority for his first year in office, but lawmakers ended their annual session without consensus on what to do. They scheduled a special session from June 12 to 22 to try again. Crist largely stepped back from the House and Senate negotiations, saying he wanted to give lawmakers room to work out a plan.
