Talk of the bay: OSI buyout vote is again put on the back burner

One week after postponing a shareholder meeting on its bid to go private, OSI Restaurant Partners still can't muster a majority vote. The Tampa parent of chains such as Outback Steakhouse and Carrabba's Italian Grill said Monday afternoon that it would postpone today's rescheduled vote for yet another week. OSI will use the extra time to persuade nonvoters to cast a "yes" vote on the $40-per-share buyout deal. The company declined to say whether it also would press some shareholders to switch their "no" votes to "yes, " a tactic that is permitted under securities rules.

Shocker: Bay area great for retirees

The Tampa Bay area is one of the best places to live in the country - if you're retired. That's the verdict from Kiplinger's Personal Finance magazine and writer Richard Florida and his Creative Group. They picked 25 of what they called the best cities in the country, then sorted them into stage-of-life categories. To make the list, an area had to score high in job growth, technology, talent and work force. For the retiree ranking, health care costs, crime rate and physicians per capita got heavier weight. Getting special note: Ybor City, the Arts Center in St. Petersburg and the grouper sandwiches at Frenchy's Rockaway Grill in Clearwater Beach. What if you're young and single? Try Austin, Texas, or Denver.

Pearlman prizes yours for top bid

What would you pay for an Orlando Predators helmet or one of the Backstreet Boys' gold records? How about a picture of Lou Pearlman with Britney Spears? Bankruptcy trustee Soneet Kapila plans to auction off property Pearlman left behind when he left the country. Items on the block will include plasma TVs, office furniture and a Dale Chihuly glass sculpture as well as music memorabilia. The date hasn't been set yet, but it's expected to be within the next month. Pearlman's creditors include more than 1, 400 investors in a $317-million Ponzi scheme.

Checkers sets pace in ad creativity

The checkered flag goes to Checkers Drive-In Restaurants for its NASCAR sponsorship. Saint Louis University's John Cook School of Business named Checkers one of five winners of the annual Bill Veeck Sports Sponsorship Awards honoring creativity and effectiveness in sports marketing. Checkers' sponsorship included a summer sweepstakes tied to the movie Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby. Veeck was a legendary sports promoter.
