Teenager dies, two injured as car hits tree

ST. PETERSBURG - A 16-year-old boy was killed early Monday when a 2007 Nissan that he was traveling in veered off the road in the 3600 block of 37th Street S and hit a tree, police said. The car was speeding when it went off the road and into a ditch, then suddenly became airborne, police said. Roderick McCullough, 16, who was in the rear of the car, died at the scene. Another passenger, 16-year-old Emmitt Crater, was able to crawl out of the rear window of the car and was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he was in good condition. The driver, Katrina Megarrah, 35, was in critical condition at Bayfront. Police are investigating the 3:10 a.m. crash, but had not filed any charges by late Monday.
Ex-quarterback killed on motorcycle
TAMPA - Taylor Pike, a former high school quarterback, was killed early Monday after he lost control of his motorcycle, authorities said. Pike, 21, was traveling north on Golf and Sea Boulevard around 2:20 a.m. when his 2004 Yamaha motorcycle struck a curb, sending Pike and the motorcycle into the railing of a pedestrian bridge. He died at the scene. Toxicology reports are pending, said Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter. Pike was quarterback for the Cambridge High School Lancers inaugural football season in 2003, and is credited with throwing the team's first touchdown pass.
Alcohol cited in SUV-train fatality
ZEPHYRHILLS - The man investigators say rammed a sport utility vehicle and pushed it into a moving train late Thursday has been charged with DUI manslaughter. The Florida Highway Patrol says Eli Alvarez, 26, 34240 St. Joe Road in Dade City was driving drunk when he hit the Mitsubishi Montero driven by Heather Eres of Wesley Chapel, who was stopped at a railroad crossing on State Road 54 east of Zephyrhills. The resulting crash sent the Montero through the crossing gate and into the moving train, killing Eres' 9-year-old son Kevin Bryant. Eres was critically injured. Investigators say Alvarez smelled of alcohol.
Arson investigated in fire at house
ST. PETERSBURG - Police and fire crews are investigating an arson fire that ravaged a house in the South Beach Shore neighborhood early Monday. Fire crews arrived at the home, 500 66th Ave. S, just before 4 a.m. Monday to find smoke and a bedroom in flames, said Lt. Rick Feinberg, a spokesman for St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue. They also discovered the fire was intentionally set at the house, which was for sale, Feinberg said. Property records show the home is owned by and Nikita and Hopeton Goslin. Nikita Goslin told investigators she moved out months ago after she was the victim of an armed robbery at the home.
Man charged with sexual battery
TARPON SPRINGS - A Tarpon Springs man was arrested on a charge of sexual battery on Sunday - his birthday. Breece Robinson, 27, is accused of fondling and sexually battering a young woman in his apartment, according to an arrest affidavit from the Tarpon Springs Police Department. He was being held at the Pinellas County jail on Monday in lieu of $55, 000 bail.
