You can drink the water, said Jessie Goodwin, interim director of Hernando County Utilities Department. Three tests taken May 3 at the Cedar Lane Water System detected fecal coliform bacteria, according to a notice sent out by the department after it received the results May 8. The department is required by the federal Environmental Protection Agency to notify residents, Goodwin said. Goodwin checked two years' worth of test results and found no indication of a failure that would explain the contamination, and follow-up tests came back clean. For more information, call Mack Washington, water plants supervisor, at (352) 754-4490.
