  • For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.

A pattern for young beginners

By EUNICE FARMER, Special to the Times
Published May 17, 2007

Q: My preteen girls and their friends began sewing last summer. They loved it and made several pairs of pajama pants. Now they would like to make something else. Can you give us some pattern suggestions?

A: I have selected Kwik-Sew 2939 or 2940, sizes 4 to 14. It is a darling skirt and a simple top for the summer. It requires lightweight woven fabric with a border at the hem, or a ruffle at the hem. I'm sure they will love it, and they will be ready for a little more difficult pattern. Just be sure they are excited and happy. Whatever you do, don't let them become discouraged. Remember, practice makes perfect.

This week's winner

Each week, a reader wins a prize for sending in a helpful sewing hint. This week's winner is Allyson Mahler of Portland, Ore. She will receive a collection of 100 hand-sewing needles from England. Her tip:

"I super-glued a strip of magnet to my vacuum hose nozzle. The magnet picks up pins before they are caught in the machine and dust bag. It's perfect for cleaning your sewing area."

You, too, could win a collection of hand-sewing needles. Send your sewing tips to Eunice Farmer, Box 31729, St. Louis, MO 63131, or e-mail If she selects your tidbit for publication, you'll receive this prize.

Eunice Farmer is a nationally recognized authority on sewing. She is an author, teacher, lecturer and fashion reporter, and she owns her own fabric boutique and sewing school in St. Louis.
