For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Dee Brown entered the Potomac Nationals' game against Myrtle Beach on Wednesday night mired in his worst slump of the season, but found a little bit of traction, hitting a home run and scoring twice.
The former Hernando star has just four hits in his past 28 at-bats, but is hitting .304 overall for the Washington Nationals' high-Class A affiliate. Brown, 24, also has 20 RBIs, 28 runs scored, three home runs, two triples and six stolen bases.
Here's a look at three other former Hernando County athletes who are playing professional baseball:
RP, West Virginia Power (Low-A/Milwaukee)
The former Central star had a rough week, giving up four runs on three hits and two walks in 2/3 of an inning Sunday. Three days later, he allowed two hits and a run in an inning of work. On the season, Ryan is 2-0 with a 4.01 ERA, 24 strikeouts and 11 walks in 24 2/3 innings.
Bert Snow, SP,
Shreveport Sports (American Association of Independent Baseball)
The former Hernando star, now 30 years old and serving as a player/coach, won his first start of the season. Snow pitched six innings of a 5-3 win over Fort Worth, allowing one run on five hits and four walks while striking out four.
Bronson Arroyo, SP
Cincinnati Reds (Major League Baseball)
Arroyo, 30, has been the victim of poor run support this season. In the past week, he has notched two losses, despite allowing a total of three earned runs. On May 11, the former Hernando star pitched six innings in a 2-0 loss to Los Angeles. Then, on Wednesday, he pitched eight strong innings against San Diego, but walked home the winning run with no outs in the ninth to lose 3-2. Arroyo is 2-4 with a 2.64 ERA.
