Head-on crash kills man, 54, driving SUV

A 54-year-old Brooksville man died Wednesday evening after a head-on collision on Powell Road. John W. Parker was driving his 2005 Pontiac SUV east on Powell Road near the intersection with Tanya Street when an oncoming vehicle driven by Gloria Spadafino swerved into his lane, according to the Florida Highway Patrol. Reports state the 40-year-old Spring Hill woman drove off the road then overcorrected into Parker's path. Spadafino and a passenger were flown to St. Joseph's hospital with injuries.

American Legion distributes poppies

Members of American Legion Auxiliary Unit 99 will distribute poppies at various locations throughout Brooksville today and Saturday. The poppies will be distributed for a donation, which will benefit veterans in area hospitals and rehabilitation centers, who made the poppies in honor of Poppy Days.

Seminar on mental health is Saturday

The National Alliance on Mental Illness/NAMI Hernando will host the 13th annual Mental Health Seminar from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at Springbrook Hospital, 7007 Grove Road. The Hernando County Health Department will conduct a free orientation for the American Cancer Society's Freedom From Smoking classes at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at the office at 7465 Forest Oaks Blvd. Those who wish to take the course pay $25. Classes will be at 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays through July 10; an additional meeting will be June 14 (a Thursday) during "quit week." Get concert tickets by Saturday

Saturday is the deadline to purchase tickets for the outdoor concert May 27 at the Hernando Beach Club, 3145 Flamingo Blvd. Music will be provided by Live From Chicago, a duo who will perform music from the 1960s to the present. Doors open at 5 p.m., food will be served at 6 and show time is 7. Tickets are $11 for members and $13 for nonmembers. Call Bunni at 688-4976.


A Monday story on the voluntary prekindergarten program in Hernando County provided incomplete information on eligibility requirements. Students must be 5 years old by Sept. 1 to qualify for the summer program, but children who are 4 years old by that date are eligible to participate in the regular school-year program.
