Coach: Kenneth Hiscock (second season, 7-3)

2006 record: 7-3 (lost in district tiebreaker)

District opponents: Bloomingdale, Brandon, East Bay, Plant City

Jamboree result: Lost 26-0 to Armwood.

Who's gone: DE Luke Drake, QB Keith Gosdoski, RB Rico Hickman, OL Chaz Hine, TE Stephen Ley, FB Bryant Moores, RB Collin O'Connor

Who's back: LB Ryan Gerena, LB Abe Kazbour, CB/WR Brett Lively, RB Andrew Philbert, CB/WR Andy Sulsavich

What's new: A bunch of new starters on offense, as well as a coordinator. Randy Tira, a 20-year prep coaching veteran in Pennsylvania, joins the Wolves staff and assumes the tricky task of implementing both Wing-T and spread formations. "If one doesn't work we're gonna try the other one, " said Hiscock, who must replace his entire backfield and all but one lineman. Juniors Stacey Beckwith and Andy Repass were vying for the quarterback job all spring, but senior Kyle Parker - the ace on Newsome's baseball team - will join the competition when preseason drills commence. ...Newsome, the odd team out in the Class 4A, District 11 tiebreaker last fall, moves to 5A-7.

Audibles: "We don't have a lot of size; we're a smaller team. But I think we make up for it with our speed." - Hiscock

Did you know?: Diminutive senior tailback Andrew Philbert is making a strong campaign for the unofficial title of east Hillsborough's most snakebitten player. Philbert started three games last season before sustaining a broken ankle, then missed nearly all of spring drills with bone chips in the same ankle. He insists he'll be ready for the season opener.

Schedule: Aug. 24: at Lennard (kickoff classic); Aug. 31: Spoto; Sept. 7: Jesuit; Sept. 14: at Durant; Sept. 21: at Armwood; Sept. 28: Robinson; Oct. 5: at Brandon; Oct. 12: at Riverview; Oct. 18: Plant City; Oct. 26: East Bay; Nov. 2: at Bloomingdale
