DUNEDIN - When Clearwater Central Catholic captured the Class 3A state championship Tuesday, it signaled the end of the line for Pinellas baseball teams. But for the area Little Leagues that feed the Marauders and other high school teams around the county, the action is just getting under way.

The first pitch of the annual Tournament of Champions will be thrown out today as teams from the area vie for district supremacy. The tournament, which goes through June 6, is for Little League baseball and softball.

"Our goal is to keep these kids off the streets and for them to have fun, " District 5 spokeswoman Swanee Franklin said. "That's what Little League baseball is all about and this is a great way to kick off the summer."

The tournament is designed to crown a champion in each division minor, major, junior, senior for both districts in the area (5 and 12). Each district structures its TOC a little differently.

Most divisions in District 12 start today, with major baseball beginning Saturday. The majority of District 5 opens play Saturday, with major baseball starting May 29. Following completion of the TOC, each Little League will pick All-Star teams for the June district tournaments.
