COLUMBIA, S.C. - The chairman of the Republican National Committee said Friday his home state of Florida will face sanctions if it moves ahead with plans to hold an early presidential primary.

Sen. Mel Martinez, who heads the national party, told an audience of GOP state leaders that Florida's leaders have been warned of consequences should they hold their primary Jan. 29. Gov. Charlie Crist plans to sign that change into law next week.

Party rules call for a loss of delegates at the party's national convention and other sanctions.
