A look back in time
By Times Staff Writer

This is Sacred Valley, where the Uruhamba River runs and where the Inca civilization was headquartered. My wife, Rebecca, and I saw a lot of terraces used to grow crops, some of them 500 to 600 years old. They grew tons of food there. This photo was taken on our 21st wedding anniversary. Guides took us up to where the Incas lived. It was a burial ground. Lots of tombs, holes in walls of caves. We wandered around there, a couple of thousand feet above the river. Pretty high elevation for a Florida boy. These women were there in the parking lot selling handmade goods and things like that. I took this picture of one of the women with her baby on her back. The terraces and river behind her tie her ancient Inca heritage from yesterday to today. I look at her and look to the right 600 years back in time. Eric Houghton of Dunedin as told to Fred. W.
