ST. PETERSBURG - Following Class A Northside Christian's 27-7 rout of Seminole, the Mustangs did everything they could to contain their excitement.
During the postgame speech, several rising seniors discussed taking the upset over the Class 5A school in stride and stressed the importance of working hard through the summer.
But running back David Edwards still knew how big the win was in helping establish the team's identity for next year.
"After the first series, we knew from the way we were hitting and the way they responded that we could play with them, " said Edwards, who scored on a 50-yard run in the fourth quarter. "We know some of the guys on their team, so it was pretty awesome to beat them."
The Mustangs dominated all sides of the ball in the spring game, including the kicking game as Seth Rogers consistently booted kickoffs into the end zone.
The defense held the Warhawks to two first downs in the first half.
In the second quarter, Tyler Stowell passed for two touchdowns, a 12-yarder to Ben Kaylor and a 17-yarder to JoJo Hess. He finished the game completing 5 of 6 passes for 64 yards.
