Pinellas spring football: Clearwater

Published May 20, 2007

Coach: Tom Bostic (24th year)

2006 record: 4-6

Key losses: LB Cass Carter, DL Kirk Moncol, OL D.J. Ryder.

Key returners: QB Luke Loucks, DL Joe Marshall, WR Chris Sackmann.

Key newcomers: OL John Burke, OL Ercan Hocolar.

Spring skinny: Loucks looked sharp in Friday's spring game against Clearwater Central Catholic, completing 15 of 27 passes for 143 yards and a touchdown. His main target is Sackmann, who had more than 60 receiving yards against the Marauders. The defense will be anchored by Marshall, who already has an offer from Wisconsin. But the defense needs to tighten up against the run after allowing more than 150 yards in three quarters of varsity play against CCC.

Key questions: Will Loucks, a two-sport athlete, keep playing football once he decides where to attend college for basketball? Will a young defense that lost several key starters come of age by the fall?

Gamebreaker: Sackmann has developed into one of the county's top receivers. Last year, he caught 14 passes for 230 yards against Palm Harbor University, breaking a long-standing school record for catches (11) set by Hassan Jones in 1980 and just missing the record for yards (236).
