Hillsborough prosecutor Pam Bondi adopted one of the dogs, a St. Bernard named Master Tank. She appeared Tuesday with attorney Barry Cohen, in back, and Couture family members.

TAMPA - Two dogs that ended up in the center of a legal dispute after being stranded by Hurricane Katrina are being returned to their owners.

The dogs' original owners, a woman who adopted one of the dogs and the attorneys for both sides announced the settlement in downtown Tampa Tuesday.

"This is what we wanted from the beginning, our dogs to be back with us, to be back home, " said Dorreen Couture, who lives in Louisiana.

Hillsborough assistant state attorney Pam Bondi, who adopted a St. Bernard owned by the Coutures, said it is wrenching to return the dog, which was in poor health when she received him.

"I promised him I would keep him safe his entire life, " she said.

Bondi said she has gotten to know the Coutures, and even has had dinner with them.

"Together, we came to what was the logical, compassionate, reasonable decision for all of us," she said.

Although attorneys said terms of the settlement will remain confidential, Bondi said she anticipated that she would still have a relationship with the Coutures and the dog and that they would work together.

"I love him so much, " Bondi said. "It's breaking my heart. I love him, but I kept my promise to him."

Steven and Dorreen Couture of St. Bernard Parish, La., last year sued Bondi, Rhonda Rineker of Dunedin and the Humane Society of Pinellas County in an effort to regain the dogs.

Bondi adopted one dog, a St. Bernard named Master Tank. She renamed the dog Noah, but said Tuesday that she has recently been calling him "Noah Tank" in anticipation of returning him to the Coutures.

Rineker adopted the other dog, a shepherd mix named Nila, and renamed that dog Gracie.

Nila was returned to the Coutures first, and Master Tank was scheduled to be returned immediately after the news conference.

The dispute, which has received national attention, had its roots in the chaotic aftermath of Hurricane Katrina.

Though Steven Couture rode out the storm with the dogs, he was forced to leave them behind during the evacuation.

Eventually a family member took the dogs to a rescue shelter at St. Bernard Parish. There, they were left under the Coutures' name but later were turned over to the Pinellas Humane Society in September 2005.

A short time later, Bondi and Rineker adopted the dogs. Bondi adopted the St. Bernard on Oct. 15, 2005. Rineker adopted the shepherd-mix on Oct. 28, 2005.

The Coutures tracked the dogs to the Tampa area in January 2006 but had been unsuccessful in their efforts to get their dogs back. They filed suit last July, and a trial had been scheduled to start July 9.

But after sniping at each other through the media and in court for months, both sides came to terms this spring.

The Coutures reached a settlement with Bondi on April 20 and met with Rineker on May 11, when they agreed to a settlement, said Murray Silverstein, who represents the Coutures.

"They approached us and said it might be worthwhile to sit down and have meaningful discussions, " Silverstein said.

The overture came on the "understanding that Pam Bondi wanted to go over all of this and explain herself to the Coutures so they that they also could speak freely with her, " he said.

At Tuesday's news conference, Bondi said she was confident that the Coutures now have a good hurricane plan for the dogs. She spoke fondly of the Couture's grandson Steven, even tousling his hair at one point.

"It's all about common ground, when you can find common ground with someone and it's not antagonistic, " Bondi said.

It would be good, she said, "if everybody in the world could think about another person's position."

Bondi said "Noah Tank" has recovered from his ailments, which included a bad case of heartworms, and recently had five teeth removed.

If the case had gone to trial, the central question for the jury would have been not who could better care for the dogs or which owners the dogs prefer, but whether the Coutures abandoned their dogs in a natural disaster.

The Coutures maintained that they didn't. The adoptive owners had said they did.

The Coutures' dogs were among 288 dogs, cats and turtles brought here by the Humane Society of Pinellas after the storm devastated the Louisiana and Mississippi coasts. Most of the animals brought here were adopted. A few were returned.

Bondi doesnt understand that the Coutures didnt leave until after the storm & werent allowed to bring pets at that point. Are they aware the Sheriff Office shot & killed dogs left at that point? The trail of 2 of thoses deputies has been postponed.

So when are the lies going to stop, now that this case is closed? There are so many, but Warren Elly on Fox saying that Bondi has joint custody of Tank is a falsehood.
by Katie 05/27/07 10:09 AM
The dogs are finally HOME...The Coutures are not legally obligated to allow Bondi to have visitation. Their 'friendship' is just more spin from Bondi trying to save face. Yes, if she and Cohen had a prayer of winning, she wouldn't have returned him
by Carol 05/26/07 03:25 PM
CLAPING Yoland's insight! The dog napper took Tank to work regularly! Can we bring our pets to court?! One of Pams assoc bought a stuffed St.Bernard to wipe away Pams tears, but sadly they had NO EMPATHY for the kids who dog was converted by Pamcake!
by Yolanda 05/25/07 09:57 PM
I would bet my last dollar that the Cohen team finally realized they would LOSE and told Bondi to end it now rather than ruin his reputation for winning unwinnable cases. the slim bucket & client brought their profession to an all time low. congrats

(Copy of one of my ohter posts) All commenting sound like they really care about dogs. Please channel your energies now for the poor animals being abandoned like the doberman&against people like those who fight dogs as a so called sport.

Bondi has Visitation rights with a dog that BELONGS to someone else? So, Bondi is going to sleep in the kids bed while she visits in LA, Eat more of their food, & routinely kidnap Tank over state lines to Tampa? Heartless Dog squatter & tormentor!

Thous of pet owners LEFT when they were told and slept in cars & tents WITH their animals. Responsible pet owners don't wait during hurricane season and hope their animals don't die a slow and painful death by themselves. You own pets U have a plan!
by karen 05/25/07 06:11 AM
Consider these two dogs lucky period. Thous of animals left behind due to space,no room in the car per owners died a horrible death.Blame the shelter if u have to.Its not easy giving up a dog u luv. Thous animals are safe cuz owners had a plan & LEFT
by lucas 05/24/07 11:59 PM
What made this case different: first time in US history that the defendant knew everything horrible regarding how she got the pet and then REFUSED to give it back using over 50 reasons in the last 18 months. They were using laws from the 1800's!

Dora I'm jealous of Tanks menu (minus the bloat & Gas pains & constipation) Just wondering if Bondis custody starts this weekend? The children will constantly be victimized by Bondi's visitations,& her taking MT to Tampa. Why did the C's they agree
by Karen 05/24/07 01:40 PM
Pam Bond is a toxic interloper. She wants the dog to stay inside at the C's new place, when they have an acre of land to run with the kids and other dog. Pam you don't need a dog, try fish, snake, or reptile. You made Tampa look cold and unfeeling!
by Lea 05/24/07 01:35 PM
Marie I AGREE. Bondi the Public information Officer, has more drama than our city! Cohen helped her use our court for self serving needs at our expense. Pam Bondi does not defend the people only herself. Jeff & Ms.R didn't need an press conference?
by Tarpon 05/24/07 12:36 PM
JED--Do u know Freddy's ID # (SBP?)
by Dora 05/24/07 10:28 AM
Thank God there are attorneys of Mr. Cumming's and Mr. Silverstein's high caliber. They are to be commended for their unselfish dedication to justice for everyone. Rineker and Bondi's Team of LegalCrows should take a lesson in ethics and character:(
by Dora 05/24/07 09:02 AM
Justice can you imagine the bloat the poor dog must have suffered in addition to losing 5 teeth? Outback Steakhouse fatty leftovers and a 1/2lb cheese regularly. OMG what was the woman thinking? Obviously not the brightest bulb on the tree! Poor Tank
by Marie 05/24/07 07:13 AM
Were it not for the supreme act of kindness of attorneys, M. Silverstein and B. Cummings, David would not have been able to beat Goliath. As for the other officers of the court, they should be ashamed of themselves and deserve their just punishment.
by Billy 05/24/07 12:35 AM
Maybe Bondi can adopt Barry Cohens stuffed wolf and the two can live happily ever after in lalaland. Note that Rinekers lawyer was Jeff Brown-a talking head pal of Bondis who doesnt come cheap either. Where was Camille-Cohen shows up for the cameras?
by jad 05/23/07 09:57 PM
Finally, an answer to a prayer. In following this case for months, I could not imagine Bondi or Rineker backing down and doing what was right. I asked everyone I could think of to pray that these women would have a change of heart. Thank you God!
by Mary 05/23/07 04:51 PM
Bondi can only feel her own pain. Her self importance is a major concern 4 our justice system. If she can victimize 2 children & their grandparents.WHAT WILL SHE DO TO AN ADULT ACCUSED OF A CRIME? CHANGE MORE DOC'S, MORE PERJURY, MORE ABUSE OF TAX $$
by Justice 05/23/07 04:39 PM
Pam Bondi "Public Information Officer". More like Public Embarrassment & Humiliation of Hurricane Survivors" Bondi says the C's are NOW clean, better dog owners. MT has to travel 10 hrs to see her on a reg basis? MT lost 5 teeth eating steak/cheese.
by Kathi 05/23/07 01:05 PM
CRIMINALS hire Barry Cohen. Bondi keep him on retainer.Distorting vet records and lying under oath. The clipped toe nail turned into a removed one in court. Bondi says the C's have a hurricane plan now,she could HELP the Gov with a plan too??
by Heidi 05/23/07 11:36 AM
I am so happy for the Coutures! I am sure they are thrilled. Also impressed with Bondi and Rineker's decision to do the right thing. Hopefully they will adopt another dog. I can't believe there are still people critisizing the Coutures.
by Heidi 05/23/07 11:31 AM
Bondi and Rinneker decided to do the right thing. They seem like they have alot of love to give and there are dogs out there that would be so happy to find that love. The Coutures must be happy and what a photo! Glad this has been resolved amicably.
by Joe 05/23/07 10:46 AM
Dan also check local shelters, Petfinder Lots of previous "adopters" are starting to turn Katrinapets in because the novelty of owning one has worn off! It's great to see these TWO dogs w/their family finally going home.Pam you made 2 kids/2 dogs HAPPY
by Tara 05/23/07 09:51 AM

by Jed 05/23/07 08:36 AM
