For their own good
Fifty years ago, they were screwed-up kids sent to the Florida School for Boys to be straightened out. But now they are screwed-up men, scarred by the whippings they endured. Read the story and see a video and portrait gallery.
Brian McIntyre's command from the press box used to be simple but thrilling nonetheless.
"The hair on your skin would just pop out, " Springstead girls soccer coach Polo Furlong said. "He was very, very good."
Now area soccer folks are coming together to play ball and raise money for the family of McIntyre, who died in April. McIntyre, who would have turned 50 years old today, was a coach with First Hernando Youth Soccer and announced soccer games for Springstead and Central, boys and girls teams, varsity and junior varsity.
First Hernando Youth Soccer is holding the Brian McIntyre Soccer Memorial at 4 p.m. June 16 at the First Hernando soccer fields off Anderson Snow. All proceeds will assist McIntyre's family - wife Teresa, son Kyle and daughter Brianna - specifically with college expenses.
The afternoon will start with training sessions with Robert Bogus, the recreational director of coaching for the New Tampa Soccer Association and a state ODP coach. Each 45-minute session costs $10. The sessions will be held at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.
A coaches game will follow the training sessions. Admission to the game is $3 and concessions will be available.
Donations can be sent to Teresa McIntyre, P.O. Box 15746, Brooksville, FL 34604.
