Football progress report: CCC

Clearwater Central Catholic
Coach: Mike Jalazo (sixth season)
2006 record: 7-5
Key losses: WR Chris Campbell; DL Jarrett Fisher; RB/LB Nate Lenz
Key returners: QB Brent Henderson; RB/lB Anthony Cochran; PK Jeff Ijjas; RB Micah Poole; OL/DL Kyle Rettig.
Spring skinny: The Marauders have the weapons on offense to be potent. Henderson was thrust into the starting lineup as a junior last season after Andrew Nowels transferred and played with veteran poise, throwing for more than 1, 500 yards and 15 touchdowns. He has plenty of targets, including Paul Freeman, David Grazione and Danny Wood. The defense lost some starters but should still be stout.
Key questions: Can CCC make the playoffs for the 12th straight season? Will the defense be able to tighten up in the secondary?
Gamebreaker: After a handoff, Poole is likely to abuse defenders with his multiple skills. The junior has the ability to make the first tackler miss, whether it's with his elusiveness or downfield speed.
In Friday's spring game against Clearwater, the breathtakingly fast runner scored two touchdowns, including one on a 38-yard run.
Schedule: Aug. 31 vs. Miami Bay Point; Sept. 7 at Tampa Catholic; Sept. 14 vs. Orlando Lake Highland Prep; Sept. 21 vs. St. Cloud Harmony; Sept. 28 vs. Fort Meade; Oct. 5 vs. Berkeley Prep; Oct. 12 at St. Petersburg Catholic; Oct. 19 at Frostproof; Oct. 26 at Mitchell; Nov. 2 Sarasota Cardinal Mooney.
