Dispatcher may be in hot water for last time

A police dispatcher accused of insulting co-workers has been suspended without pay and could lose her job.

Phyllis Melton, 43 , of Pinellas Park was earning about $31, 485 a year when she was suspended May 17 for five working days without pay. A hearing to decide if she will be fired is scheduled for this month.

City records show that police officials are asking that Melton be fired for her comments and for having multiple offenses within 18 months.

Melton was accused this month of "antagonizing" a fellow dispatcher during a verbal altercation. City records indicate that Melton told the co-worker "that she ... had a bad attitude and she needed a drink and she was jealous and that she looked like the cat s--- in her cat box at home." Another city employee overheard the comments. Melton admitted she made the remarks about cat excrement and jealousy.

Melton did not return a phone message asking for comment.

Melton has been in trouble several times since beginning work with the Pinellas Park Police Department in January 2003.

City records show that in October 2004, Melton was verbally reprimanded for substandard work and attendance issues. The city said she went home without permission before her shift ended. Melton also allegedly failed to record that an officer had checked out.

In a memo responding to those allegations, Melton said co-workers were talking loudly, which impeded her ability to hear the radio. She also reported that a co-worker had used vulgar language to describe someone during that conversation.

Melton was given a written reprimand and was suspended for one day without pay in November 2005 after she allegedly "yelled" at a co-worker in "a demeaning and condescending manner" for taking a break and making an emergency phone call. She also allegedly berated a police officer at the same time.

Melton said then that she was unaware of the reason the co-worker took a break and did not "yell, " but "only spoke loud enough for (her) to hear me."

Melton was given another written reprimand and suspended for seven days without pay in March 2006 after she was "discourteous and insulting to the extent that the behavior interfered with the efficient operation of the Police Communications Center, " according to city records.

She allegedly had a tiff with a police officer and called him "derogatory names."

The next day she was accused of verbally abusing a co-worker for several minutes while the woman was "conducting radio operations to assist multiple officers with multiple in-progress investigations."

Details about these incidents were not available.

City records indicate that she also received verbal reprimands on June 27, 2005, and Jan. 23, 2006, but information about the cause of those was not available.

They should fire her spineless co worker, give me a break. Does she run home to her mommy crying too? Sheesh!!
by Paul 05/26/07 04:02 PM
Are all her co-workers babies? Grow up, quit whining like a pre-schooler when someone says something you don't like!!

Thank you Jamie, took the words off my keyboard. 911 usually refers callers to local PDs, so people calling 911 will often speak to local dispatchers. Aside from taxes, this is clearly a serious public safety issue and is therefore newsworthy.
by Jamie 05/25/07 08:45 AM
The reason this is news is because your taxes pay her wages. Goodness, you'd think people would want to know what is happening in their munincipal offices.

This isn't a news worthy item. This type of problem takes place in every company and isn't reported. Just because it's the police department it make the news. Has the media nothing else better to report?

Melton has run off at the mouth since 2003 and you have allowed her to do so, so take a deep breath and fire her, she should have been history years ago. Stop whining and act, there are others who could replace her, STOP THE OFFICE ABUSE NOW !!

Fire her and then hire her as a law enforcement officer! She'd fit right in with that mouth and attitude!!
by Robert 05/23/07 06:00 PM
sounds like she needs an attitude adjustment
by johnny 05/23/07 01:10 PM
Seriously, why is this in the paper? This type of behavior happens almost everyday in this country at numerous companies. Isn't there something better out there to report?
by Ken 05/23/07 12:27 PM
Yeah, why is this news? What's next? A story about your tofu being under cooked.

Hello?! She's NOT a 911 operator. She communicates with Pinellas Park police, not people calling 911. Can you people read? I guess not. But aside from that, she should be fired immediately. She's a detriment to the city.

Fire her! We can't have hostility or violence in ANY workplace. I was disabled by a violent member of the workforce. People should not have to wake everyday to be greeted by hostility or violence at work or any other place. Check her for drugs.

How could the City of Pinellas Park allow this to go on for such a protracted period of time and not fire this person? Sounds like she is a prime candidate for counseling, or a fat lip.

A hostile work environment hurts everyone's performance. The job is stressful enough without voilative employees...If I have to call 911, I dont want a distracted operator handling my calls....
by Jason 05/23/07 10:01 AM
For those who say that this isn't news: Read between the lines. This story pinpoints how companies, even goverment depatments, are gun shy about firing people since most people bring lawsuits these days. We need people in 911 ctrs that are sane!!
by Dylan 05/23/07 09:58 AM
I would yelling too, making only 31k to work as a 911 dispatcher!!
by Valerie 05/23/07 09:48 AM
The sad part is that some officers treat the dispatchers terribly, and that seems to be okay, nevermind the fact that the dispatchers already hear an earful from abusive public callers constantly. It's enough to make any snap, sadly.
by Marsha 05/23/07 09:45 AM
Okay... Who is this woman. and Why is she so worried about what her co-workers are doing... her self-importance is hindering her job and morale.. besides FL is fire at will! Let her go or put her on probation!!! and some anger management something!!!
by Nancy 05/23/07 09:44 AM
It is great to finally hear that dysfunction and unprofessionalism in the workplace has repercussions. I have worked in other places that allowed such disruptive, aggressive and unacceptable behavior to continue. It is unfair to everyone else!
by Barbara 05/23/07 09:39 AM
Why is this news? It's not. It's diversionary drivel that the Times fills its pages with now.

Fear of getting sued is probably why they haven't yet fired her. That's how it is these days....
by John 05/23/07 09:26 AM
And you consider this news? This is one of the silliest "stories" yet! Get a life, this ain't news, this is just gossip
by Clancy 05/23/07 09:20 AM
Only in FloriDUH!
by Maria 05/23/07 08:56 AM
I'm not feeling safe calling 911 right now. Where do they find these wackos?!
by HCB 05/23/07 08:37 AM
John - you're yelling. You're fired.
by David 05/23/07 08:12 AM
Why is she still employed? She is clearly not fit such an important job. People's lives could be at stake on the other end of that radio call. I am sure the citizens of Pinellas Park don't want their tax dollars paying a penny to this person.
by Bud 05/23/07 07:33 AM
She should have been demoted or dismissed a long time ago as seems like this kind of work requires a pretty level headed person.
by John 05/23/07 02:14 AM
WHY IS THIS YAHOO STILL WORKING THERE??? She should have been fired after the first few altercations. Funny how some people blame their problems on others and will not accept the responsibility themselves.
