TAMPA - USF will play Florida State in men's basketball for the first time since 2002.
USF has committed to play in an eight-team tournament, tentatively called the Daytona Beach Shootout, which would conclude with a matchup Nov. 18. USF has not signed a contract but is expected to do so within the next two weeks.
The Bulls and Seminoles have not met since Jan. 1, 2002, a 78-74 FSU win at the Sun Dome.
The tournament will start on college campuses with USF hosting Cleveland State on Nov. 9. All eight schools will convene in Daytona Beach on Nov. 16 with the Bulls expected to play Rhode Island, Florida Atlantic and FSU over a three-day span.
OKLAHOMA: Forward Ryan Wright plans to transfer from UCLA. He averaged 1.9 points and 1.6 rebounds in 28 games as a backup last season. After sitting out this season, he will have two seasons of eligibility left.
Baseball: USF wins tournament opener
BROOKLYN, N.Y. - USF scored a run in the ninth on one of Pittsburgh's six errors for a 2-1 victory at the Big East tournament. The Bulls, the No. 5 seed, face St. John's, which beat Connecticut 8-1, at 8 tonight. The Red Storm is the top seed of the double-elimination tournament.
Tied at 1 against the No. 4 seed, Joey Angelberger led off USF's ninth with a bunt single and went to second on Nick Cardieri's sac bunt. Walter Diaz followed with a grounder to second baseman Brian Muldowney, whose throw to first was wild and allowed Angelberger to score.
Danny Otero allowed three hits and struck out four in his fifth complete game for USF. He pitched a perfect ninth to complete his 86-pitch night.
ATHENS, Ga. - Georgia's men won their fifth national title by beating Illinois 4-0. The Bulldogs, who won titles in 1985, 1987, 1999 and 2001, finished 32-0 to become the first team to go unbeaten since Illinois in 2003. They were unbeaten last year before losing to Pepperdine in the final.
FLORIDA: Jesse Levine was named national rookie of the year by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association. The freshman is 21-0 entering this week's NCAA singles tournament and 18-2 with Greg Ouellette entering the doubles tournament.
FOOTBALL: LSU suspended quarterback Ryan Perrilloux indefinitely after he was cited for trying to get on a riverboat casino in Baton Rouge. Perrilloux, 20, allegedly tried to use his older brother's driver's license to enter the casino, for which the minimum age is 21. Perrilloux was one of the nation's top recruits in 2004 and as a redshirt freshman last season threw four passes in five games as the No. 3.
