Sparks flies

It was the entertainer vs. the singer, Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks facing off in the American Idol performance finale Tuesday at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles.

They sang one song they had performed before on Idol, one they hadn't and the song that won a national contest to find one for the Idol winner that was better than the usual treacle forced on him or her unfortunately, the winner was just as treacly.

Here's a breakdown of what happened before America voted.

BLAKE SANG: You Give Love A Bad Name, from Bon Jovi week; She Will Be Loved, Maroon 5, his new song; the contest winner, This Is My Now.

THE JUDGES SAID: Randy Jackson, Paula Abdul and Simon Cowell thought the Bon Jovi song, full of Lewis' signature beat boxing, was a great performance. All thought She Will Be Loved was a nice vocal, but Cowell said the song didn't make an impact. All said Lewis did as well as he could with the final song, a smarmy ballad that is not his forte.

BEST SIMON LINE: Of This Is My Now: "It was all a little odd. I mean, all the jumping around in the middle."

JORDIN SANG: Fighter, Christina Aguilera; her new song, A Broken Wing, Martina McBride, from country week; This Is My Now.

THE JUDGES SAID: Jackson and Abdul thought the Fighter vocal was great; Cowell thought it was shaky in the middle. All liked Broken Wing and loved the final song.

BEST SIMON LINE: Of This Is My Now: "You just wiped the floor with Blake on that song."

JUDGES' VERDICT: Jackson said Sparks won the night because of her voice. Abdul said both were winners. Cowell said that Lewis had the better performance with You Give Love A Bad Name but that Sparks had the better overall night.
