Spring foootball: Pinellas progress report.

Published May 23, 2007

Coach: Yusuf Shakir (first year)

2006 record: 4-6

Key losses: LB Navi and Zco Uhatafe, LB Deuntae Bryant, DB Adam Rogers

Key returners: QB Lamar Hall, RB Devon McCullough, WR Larry Murphy, LB Raymond Brinson, RB/FS Jajuan Moorer

Spring skinny: Shakir laid the groundwork his first few months, establishing weekly grade checks while running extremely organized, fast-paced practices. But installing new schemes for the offense, defense and special teams won't happen overnight. The Gladiators struggled, especially offensively, in a 24-10 loss to Boca Ciega in the spring classic. The run-orientated Gladiators managed just 45 yards of total offense.

Key questions: How quickly will the offensive line come together? Can McCullough, who is finally healthy after back injuries plagued him last year, have a breakout season?

Gamebreaker: Moorer. The senior-to-be will combine with other key members of his class - McCullough, Murphy and Brinson - to help carry the Gladiators through a tough schedule. Moorer is short but swift, and can play nearly every position.

Schedule: Aug. 31: Lakewood; Sept. 7: at Countryside; Sept. 14: Northeast; Sept. 20: Dixie Hollins; Sept. 28: at Clearwater; Oct. 5: at St. Petersburg; Oct. 19: at Seminole; Oct. 26: Pinellas Park; Nov. 2: Largo; Nov. 9: Boca Ciega.
