Sentencing od ex-housing official delayed
By TIMES WIRES
Published May 24, 2007
The sentencing of former Brooksville Housing Authority administrator Joe Ann Bennett on a federal fraud charge - scheduled for Wednesday at the U.S. District Court in Tampa - has been postponed to June 25. Bennett, who retired from her longtime position as the authority's program manager in September, was indicted in November along with Executive Director Betty Trent. The sentencing date was changed so it falls after Trent's trial, which is scheduled for June 11, said Amy Filjones, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office in Tampa. When Bennett pleaded guilty to one count of defrauding the federal government of $40, 650 in February, she agreed to testify against Trent, who was suspended from her job after the indictment. Bennett, who has been ordered to repay the stolen funds, faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of $250, 000, her attorney, Ellis Faught, said in February. He said Bennett's sentence will likely be less severe because she has no previous criminal record.
