Countryside coach John Davis knows he is rich in running backs with Dawrence Roberts, Maurice Threatts, Ryan Messmore and Richard Shockley, who all figure to get carries in the fall.

The big question was how well a revamped offensive line that has one returning starter (Christian Molina) would perform.

The Cougars got the answer in Wednesday's 27-14 victory over host Naples Lely.

Countryside moved the ball on the ground and scored three rushing touchdowns.

"We had to do a lot of shuffling along the offensive line, and I was concerned about how well we would be able to run the ball, " Davis said. "I was pleased. I thought we were able to open some holes."

Shockley, a tight end who was converted into a fullback, scored twice in the first half on runs of 30 and 5 yards to help the Cougars take a 14-7 halftime lead.

In the second half, Threatts ran 14 yards for a touchdown, and Jimbo Chmelik hit Jesse Coretes on a 5-yard pass for Countryside's final score.

"It was the way we wanted to cap off the spring, " Davis said. "We made some mistakes, but the good thing is we don't play again until August."
