lakeland wants new moniker for usf

University of South Florida Lakeland students shouldn't get too attached to their bumper stickers and T-shirts. The 3, 200-student college is considering a name change. Up for consideration: USF Polytechnic, USF Central and USF Heartland. "We're looking to rebrand the school in a way that is more inclusive to the area we represent, " said Marshall Goodman, CEO of the Lakeland campus. The campus draws students from Hillsborough, Hardee, Highlands and Polk counties, which make up a Central Florida region dubbed the Heartland. The area also is slated for a massive proposed toll road that Goodman has endorsed. So far the USF Heartland tag isn't faring well and isn't expected to be adopted.


- Redington Beach hasn't adopted an expanded $50, 000 homestead exemption for low-income seniors as Florida voters authorized in November. Rather, starting in 2008, qualified low-income Redington Beach seniors can receive a $25, 000 senior exemption. That is in addition to a $25, 000 traditional homestead exemption provided to all homesteaded homeowners. A story Wednesday was incorrect on that point.
