The Black Educator's Caucus will host its annual Marie A. Lawson Scholarship Banquet and Award Ceremony from 6 to 9 p.m. June 8 at the Best Western Hotel, 30307 Cortez Blvd., east of Brooksville. The main speaker will be Dr. Keylo King of Brooksville. Catering will be provided by Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant. Tickets are $30 each or $50 for two. Sponsors are also needed. Table tennis, anyone?
The Brooksville Recreation Department is seeking table tennis players to join a social group that meets to play games from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays at the Jerome Brown Community Center, 99 Jerome Brown Place, off Darby Lane. Players of all skill levels are welcome. The cost is $3 per person each night. For information, call 544-5498.
Schools chief touts FCAT gains
Superintendent Wendy Tellone weighed in Thursday on recent Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test results. "We are making gains, and some of them are quite significant, " she said, citing recent norm-referenced test scores for grades 3 through 10. Those scores show Hernando students "out-performed the national average in every category, " Tellone said. "These results are evidence that we are on the right track, " she added.

Volleyball league seeks players
Players are needed for Hernando County Recreation's Adult 6V6 Co-Ed Sand Volleyball league that will be starting soon. Both teams and individuals can sign up. Games will be at Delta Woods Park on Deltona Boulevard. A meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. June 6 at the press box at Veterans Memorial Park on Spring Hill Drive. Correction
The Hernando County Aviation Authority owns the land in the Airport Industrial Park on which the private company Auto Trim Express sits. A story in Thursday's Hernando Times about a fire at the business was unclear on this point.
