Why we picked him: After a promising freshman season, Locke literally burst past his local counterparts this year, accelerating from zero to 100 meters faster than anyone in the county. In the meets that counted most, he established his area supremacy - medaling in three events at the Class 4A meet - and forged an intense, friendly rivalry with Lakeland senior and University of Florida football signee Chris Rainey. Locke edged Rainey by a hundredth of a second to win the 100-meter dash in 10.63 seconds at the Class 4A, Region 2 meet, then placed third behind Rainey and Jacksonville Mandarin's Harold Howell in the state meet. But his most stunning performance was a group effort. The anchor on the Sharks' 4x100-meter relay team, he helped lead Riverview to a runnerup finish (41.58 seconds) at the 4A meet.
Most impressive accomplishment: Anchoring the 4x100 relay team's runnerup finish at state. "All year, we had problems with handoffs, and our main goal was to beat Gaither (which placed third), and we accomplished that, " Locke said. "Nobody was expecting us to come in second place or to be pulling for first place."
College plans: Whoa there, let's focus on his immediate high school plans first. Locke confirmed to the Times he plans to transfer to Chamberlain because he recently moved in with his father, who resides in the Chiefs' geographic boundary. Down the road, he said he'd like nothing more than to run track at the University of Florida.
Did you know?: Locke's winning 10.63-second effort in the 100 meters at regions is three-tenths of a second shy of the Riverview record held by Jahmile Addae, who became an all-Big East free safety at West Virginia. "I think Locke by his senior year will be running the 10.3s, " Riverview boys track coach Jason Stokes said. "He's got that kind of potential."
Quote: "He could've been Riverview's first male state champion. That hurts a lot, and we're going to miss him. He's really turned into a good leader, too, and we're going to miss that, also." - Stokes
