Officials say string of fires 'suspicious'

Authorities continue to investigate a string of fires in the Royal Highlands area near the Citrus County line. Hernando County firefighters responded Thursday night to the sixth blaze in two months. It started as a brush fire but consumed and destroyed a nearby shed before it was put out. Fire officials labeled the fires as suspicious. On Friday, investigators were canvassing the neighborhood looking for clues. State Division of Forestry officials plan to distribute fliers about arson in the neighborhood today.
Coast Guard offers insight into work
The Coast Guard Auxiliary will present "Who We Are and What We Do" from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the auxiliary, 4340 Calienta St. This free program will familiarize people with all aspects of the auxiliary. Call Charlie McCaffrey, 597-8136. The three-day America's Boating Course will be from 7 to 9:30 p.m. June 4-6. This course satisfies the requirements needed to receive a Florida Boating Safety ID card. The cost is $30. Call John, 200-8325. Seat belt, boating checks under way
The Hernando County Sheriff's Office will show zero tolerance for roadway travelers not wearing their seat belts during the "Click It or Ticket" initiative, which is continuing through June 3. During this time, law enforcement officers will have safety checkpoints at Ridge Manor Boulevard, Fort Dade Avenue, Sunshine Grove Road, Powell Road, Mondon Hill Road, Coronado Drive, Linden Drive, Pinehurst Drive, Shoal Line Boulevard, Forest Oaks Boulevard and Elgin Boulevard. In addition to the roadway initiative, the sheriff's Marine Unit is conducting a "Safety on the Waterways/Safe Boating Week" through Monday. Water patrols have been increased and deputies will show zero tolerance for all safety violations.
