Countryside: Pinellas Progress Report

Over the next couple of weeks, the Times will offer a comprehensive report on each team and its progress during spring practice.

Published May 26, 2007

Coach: John Davis (sixth season)

2006 record: 8-3

Key losses: QB L.D. Crow, OL James Detwiller, PK Josh Martinez, LB A.J. Matthews, WR Matt Mooney

Key returners: RB Ryan Messmore, OL Christian Molina, RB Dawrence Roberts, FB/TE Richard Shockley, RB Maurice Threatts

Key newcomer: QB Jimbo Chmelik

Spring skinny: The biggest task was finding a replacement for quarterback L.D. Crow, a first-team, all-county selection who will be playing at Stanford in the fall. The Cougars have two candidates - Ryan Eppes and Chmelik. Both looked sharp, and Davis said the two could split time at the position. The running game should be solid with as many as four backs getting carries this season. In the spring game against Naples Lely, Shockley scored twice and Threatts once.

Key questions: Who will replace Crow at quarterback? How will a revamped offensive line that features four new starters perform?

Gamebreaker: Threatts, a speedster, showed flashes of what he could be last season. He'll be used primarily as a tailback, but could line up in various spots as a multi-dimensional force.
